Overview
Maryknoll Grade School physical education curriculum involves a movement- based
program that focuses on cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength development, and flexibility.
Various manipulative movement skill acquisitions are implemented through developmentally
age–appropriate activities. Students are provided opportunities for team building, leadership, and
sportsmanship qualities to help foster a safe and positive learning environment.
Goals
The goal of physical education is to develop physically literate individuals who have the
knowledge, skills, and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity. To pursue a
lifetime of healthful physical activity, a physically literate individual:
1. Demonstrates competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns.
2. Applies knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics related to movement
and performance.
3. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level
of physical activity and fitness.
4. Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others.
5. Recognizes the value of physical activity for: health, enjoyment, challenge, selfexpression, and/or social interaction.
Student Expectations
1. Students are required to wear their PE uniform (grey, dry-fit maroon or gold shirt and
maroon or black shorts), socks, and athletic footwear as explained in the handbook.
Students are also encouraged to bring water, wear a hat or visor, and put on sunscreen as
many of our activities are going to be outdoors. We meet every other day, 3 times a cycle
2. Students are expected to participate and do their best in all activities unless of a note from
a parent, nurse Marianne, or a doctor.
3. Students are encouraged to display positive proper attitude, conduct, and sportsmanship
at all times.

Grading Categories
1. 30% Skill Performance & Knowledge: Students will demonstrate how to recognize,
perform, and/or apply a variety of physical exercises, movements, and skills based on age
appropriate expectations. Throughout the year, students will also be assessed on a variety
of health and skill fitness components that measure: endurance, flexibility, and muscular
strength/endurance.
2. 30% Fitness and/or Nutrition Logs: Students will be required to complete a log outside
of class to help monitor their physical activity or fuel intake. This will help students
demonstrate and reflect on their life-long health/ fitness decisions and goals to be their
best.
3. 15% Sportsmanship: Students will be encouraged to display proper behavior and
attitude in PE class. Infractions include not following instructions, disrespecting the
teacher or another classmate, cheating or breaking any class or game rules, and/or
inappropriate actions such as boasting, taunting, or bullying. Please view attached rubric

4. 15% Participation & Effort: Students are expected to participate in all activities and put
forth the proper effort to the best of their abilities. Please view attached rubric for more
details.
5. 10% Attire: Students are required to wear the appropriate Maryknoll PE shirt and shorts
along with socks and athletic footwear. This is to insure safety and help prevent injury
when exercising.
