Your brain has been trained to skim what you are reading. Reading Skill: Skimming • When we skim articles or books, we need to be purposeful in our skimming, doing the things that will help us get the general idea or the big picture. • Let’s practice with an article about McDonald’s. First, we’ll watch a short video about the spread of McDonald’s. Skimming Practice • Let’s use an article about McDonald’s. • Please do not begin reading until I tell you. How many are there? - Read just the first sentence of all the body paragraphs. - Write in your book or notebook some key words that show 3 or 4 problems with McDonald’s that the author is discussing. (health concerns, loss of culture, poor treatment of workers, not convenient) Skimming Practice: McDonald’s Article • Now, read the conclusion paragraph completely. - What does the author suggest as a response to the problems with McDonald’s? (do not support McDonald’s practices, don’t eat there) Globalization Discussion Pros and Cons • Read the article, “Pros and Cons of Globalization” • In a group of 3 or 4, have each person choose one of the pros or cons to explain to the group.
