VOCABULARY-MALE SYSTEM • TESTES: Reproductive organs that make sperm and testosterone. • PENIS: The reproductive organ that removes urine from the body and that can deliver sperm to the female reproductive system. • URETHRA: A tube that starts at the bladder and ends at the opening of the penis that provides a passage for urine and semen to leave the body. • Epididymis: A tightly coiled tube where sperm mature and are stored. • Seminal Vesicles: Found near the base of the urinary bladder. Produces thick secretions that nourish the sperm and help sperm move. • Prostate Gland: Found near the bladder. Secretes a thin, milky fluid that protects sperm from acid in the female reproductive system. • Cowper’s gland: Found near the urethra below the prostate. Secretes a clear fluid that protects sperm from acid in the male urethra. VOCABULARY-FEMALE SYSTEM • OVARIES: Reproductive organs that produce eggs and the hormones estrogen and progestrone. • VAGINA: Female reproductive organ that connects the outside of the body to the uterus and receives sperm during reproduction. • FALOPIAN TUBES: Reproductive organs that transport an egg from the ovary to the uterus. • UTERUS: Reproductive organ that provides a place to support a developing human. • CERVIX: The neck of the uterus, produces fluid to help sperm travel and keeps germs out during infection. • Clitoris: A 1 in long shaft with many nerve endings that provides sensation.
