Cathedral High School Vision
Cathedral High School, a Catholic institution
in the Holy Cross tradition,
will be the model for all high schools
as she profoundly shapes the way students
think, serve and lead.
Dear Cathedral Parents,
In the event that Cathedral will be closed or delayed because
of inclement weather, please view the following TV stations Channel 6,8,11 and 13 locally. This same information will be
displayed on the website as well as the school phone and on
the websites of several of the local television stations.
Cathedral High School Mission
Cathedral, a Catholic college preparatory high school
in the Holy Cross tradition,
provides to a diverse group of students opportunities
for spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional
and physical growth through service and academic excellence.
Monday, January 16th is the celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Day: As we honor Dr. King, we will have no
school on this day. What a great opportunity to take your children with you to some of the area Dr. Martin Luther King
celebrations!
Today, all Theology classes took part in a Vocations’ Day, during which they listened to various Priests, Sisters,
and Brothers, who spoke of their vocational call and their lives. Our speakers today were:
 Sr. Edith Ben, Vocational Director of the Sisters of Providence
 Sr. Jennifer Mechtild Horner, Vocation Director of the Sisters of St. Benedict, Beech Grove
 Peter Jansen, Seminarian living at Simon Bruté House at Marian University
 Sister Lynne Matteson, Cathedral Adm. Asst., Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg
 Brother Carlos Parilla, Holy Cross Vocations Director of the Midwest Providence
 Sister Mary Ann Stewart, Cathedral teacher, Sisters of Providence
 Father John Zahn, Cathedral priest and a Diocesan Priest
I hope you join me in thanking these wonderful people, who shared their lives with our students!

The Indianapolis Professional Association is happy to announce the following students have been selected to be
honored at the 26th Achievement Awards Breakfast and Program on Saturday, April 28, 2012. This program recognizes
and honors college-bound high school seniors who have been referred as National Achievement Finalists and Semifinalists
or referred by their College Advisors as excelling in academic excellence. They are: Ridley Morgan, Imani Parker –
Robinson, and Lauren Tolley.
Congratulations to Carly (’11) and David Powers (’12), who took First Place in the Junior Pairs Mix Category in Ice
Skating in the Philippines last November. Thanks to technology, figure skating can be enjoyed in
tropical places like the Philippines. Last Nov. 26 and 27, the SM Mall of Asia hosted the Philippine
National Figure skating Championships featuring 17 homegrown and 13 Fil-Am skaters who showed
off their best footwork, spins and jumps. Sanctioned by the International Skating Union (ISU) and
the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), the competition introduced the Junior Pair Mixed category
won by siblings Carlotta Powers and David Powers. Serguei Zaitsev, the coach of Carlotta and
David, was enthusiastic about the event. He said that it was a great step to recognizing and
promoting figure skating as a professional sport in the country. “Skating is definitely a potential
Olympic sport because of these great Filipino skaters,” Zaitsev emphasized. Carlotta and David,
being first-ever participants and winners, said they had fun while performing in the competition – that
perhaps spelled the difference. With the support of their coach, they want to compete in the
Olympics.

Vol. 1. Number 6
(The Little Edge Makes the Big Difference)
by Jim Faulkner, CHS Computer Programming Instructor
Well, It is just about time to create student schedules for the Fall 2012/2013 school year. Unbelievable,
but true! Decisions must be made in the next 30 days or so.
You, as a parent, maybe more serious about the decisions than your students are, so I am sure you will be
discussing with your student(s), the question, “For which courses should I signup, for the next school year”.
Technology will dominate their college experience and their adult lives no matter what field(s) they
choose to pursue. Even when I was in college (375 years ago, in Computer Years), the word was,
“you will have 5 different careers in your lifetime”. This is true today, even more now, than it was when I first
started turning the cranks on those medieval -computers of my days at Purdue. The more one
understand Technology, the better prepared they will be for tomorrow. Life will be a matter of
“continuous technology changes”. “Be prepared for Technology Changes every day!”,
should be their mantra.
4
The Web and Computer Program Classes are NOT JUST for people planning a career within the fields.
TECHNOLOGY CLASSES ARE for everyone. Everyone must be prepared for the Technology Onslaught
that will bombard their lives. A better understanding of TODAY’s TECHNOLOGIES, is required to
handle the every-increasing bombardment of Tomorrow’s Technologies -- “Be Prepared” – as they say.
“APP’s for Handheld Devices” and “Advanced Applications” (which are usually taken after
Modern Tech) are a great “entry level” courses for those not directly interested in Computer
Programming or the Web.
(Introduction to) “Computer Programming” is a great entry-level course for those more directly interested. TechHeavy
AP-Type-Students may want to jump DIRECTLY into “AP Computer Science” , with both boots on, and running.
However
I would prefer they start with (Introduction to) “Computer Programming” first, to build/solidify their base
knowledge.

child may go through these results and utilize the resources on College Board’s website by using the
access code found on the PSAT results. Counselors will not be available past this time to deliver PSAT

Tuition Assistance for 2012-2013
Families with students returning for 10th, 11th and/or 12th grade next year and who are interested in applying for
tuition assistance for next year can begin to do so as of November 1 and should apply by
February 15, 2012. The Enrollment Management Office recently mailed information about this process
to families who received need-based tuition assistance during the current school year, but families can
learn more by visiting www.gocathedral.com/tuition.
7
Also, there are a few key changes to the process for next year that impact returning families:
 In the case of parents who are divorced or legally separated, Cathedral now requires each household to complete
the process.
 Families now submit tax documentation directly to School & Student Services for Financial Aid (SSS) instead of to
Cathedral.
 Families will receive tuition assistance awards at the time of re-enrollment (April).
The deadline for returning students to apply for tuition assistance is February 15, 2012. Please contact Mr. Duane
Emery (demery@gocathedral.com) with questions.
Much more detail is available online at www.gocathedral.com/tuition.

Service Outreach News:
Service Outreach News
The spirit of our service will be guided by Matt 25:35-36: “I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and
you gave me drink, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless and you gave to shelter. I was ill and you
came to see me.”
“There is something in humility which strangely exalts the heart.” St. Augustine. By following the path of humility which
Christ has so readily made evident to us, God is more revealed to us, even with all of our imperfections. Our love for others
and caring actions center our attention upon our Lord and his merciful grace.
Senior Service Hours Senior service hours were due Dec 1. At this time, seniors should have their service hours
completed for all four years. Heartwarming experiences are being reflected in the senior’s service work which is especially
insightful.
Class Service Projects Class service projects become perfect opportunities for off-season sport groups and families. Our
next Sophomore class spaghetti dinner will be on Wed, January 11 (4:00 PM-7:30 PM) at the Lord’s Pantry. And on
Saturday, January 14 at the Cathedral Soup Kitchen (10::30-1:30), juniors will be preparing a warm and toasty lunch,
dialoging with the homeless, and passing out more scarves completed at the Service Festival. Our freshmen will continue
their support for the Catholic Charities Christmas Store on Wednesday, Jan 25 at 3:30 by starting to prepare for next year.
Thanks for your efforts to join us in these great ministries. Details on all of these class service projects are noted below in

an enthralling opportunity to enjoy a service, language and cultural adventure in Lima and Cuzco, Peru. Dr. Tony Lazarra at
the Hogar cares for more than seventy five children. For the application, click here. You may review the website for the
Hogar at www.villalapazfoundation.org. Please contact Mrs. Halstead right away with your interest if I have not received

Spring Break Mission Trip to South Carolina We will be having a meeting about the Spring Break
mission trip during Spring Break to Charleston, South Carolina on Tuesday, Jan 17 at 3:30 in the SLC.
Come get the forms and a quick review of the trip from students who attended last year.
Service Hours on Power School Normally, service hours may be viewed on Power School. They are current
for all hours received since the start of school. For the 2011-12 academic year, service hours for seniors are
due December 1, 2011 to meet their total graduation requirement. For the academic year of 2011-12, freshmen,
sophomore and junior hours are due March 1, 2012. The service hours for all students will be shown on their
second quarter report card. If the hours for this year are completed by April 1, hours earned after April 1 may be
credited to the next year’s requirement. We are accepting service on a project basis as well. After Sep 1, hours
will not be accepted more than sixty days after the date of service performance. Click here to go directly to

Please continue to turn to the most compelling areas of need to perform your service stewardship. Thank you for
supporting your class service projects with enthusiasm and compassion. Should you desire to pursue an outreach project
with an agency not listed, you may also consult the list of service agencies available by clicking here. By working with
diligence and interest on your service, you should find yourself achieving about four hours of service each month.
The balance of 2011 and 2012 provides rich opportunities to direct helpful hands and hearts to aid our community needs.
Service hours for freshmen, sophomore and junior students for the academic year of 2011-12 are due on March 1,
16
2012. Seniors graduation hours for the academic year of 2011-2012 are due on December 1, 2011. Click here for
the 2011-12 Service Documentation. Click here for the 2011-12 Service Documentation form. Click here for the
Service Hour Criteria. Hours will not be accepted more than sixty days after the date of service performance.
Please check the service criteria because neighbor help, family help and working for a business without pay is not
accepted as service hours. We always encourage our students to help their families and neighbors but we do not
accept these efforts as service hours. We seek to perform our service in the spirit of Matthew 25:35-36.

Cathedral Chatard Hockey Club:
Saturday 12/17
The Cathedral Chatard Blues were hoping to avenge an early season loss versus the Carmel Blue Icehounds, and
they would have to come from behind to do it. Trailing 1-0 in the first period, the Blues tied the game getting a goal
from freshman JJ Freudenberg who was assisted by Sam Cavendar and Jordan Logan. Just 1:40 seconds later,
Conor Sweeney gave the Blues a 2-1 lead with assists from Conor Helrigal and Jackson Eaton. Then it was time
for the lethal power play to flex its muscle, as Jordan Logan ripped a rope with just over 1 minute left, giving the
Blues a 3 - 1 lead. Matthew Broyles and Sweeney got the assists. Period 2 was scoreless and tightly contested.
The Blues then got their 4th goal from Sweeney who was assisted on some nice passing by James Kirchgraber
and Bradley Lewis. David McCloud was a brick wall in the net frustrating Carmel with a wicked glove hand
stopping 15 out of 16 shots. The Blues headed into the holiday break with a 14-11-7 record against some very good
competition. Coach Mike Kellermeyer said he was looking forward to another great finish in 2012.

Meditation: Mark 1:29-39
“Let us go on to the nearby villages.” (Mark 1:38)
With these few words, Jesus gave his disciples a glimpse into his heart and mind. He had spent the previous evening
healing all the sick and troubled who came to his home in Capernaum. Then, after an early-morning prayer vigil, he was
ready to set out for new territory. He had dedicated himself to healing, teaching, and preaching the gospel, and he could not
allow other ideas—even attractive ones like a local, smaller-scaled ministry—to distract him.
Jesus had a lot going on in his life, didn’t he? But we do as well. We have many different callings— parent, employee,
friend, spouse, parishioner—and we often wonder how we can keep on top of all of them.
20
By following Jesus’ example, that’s how! Not only did he have to keep on top of his own callings, he also had to deal with
the countless people wanting his attention. Many sought him out for healing or to plead for a loved one’s deliverance.
Others wanted to probe his teachings more deeply. Still others were laying traps, trying to discredit him. But somehow,
Jesus kept his bearings. He never lost sight of who he was and what God had called him to do.
What was Jesus’ secret? Every day, he sought wisdom from his Father. Day in and day out, he carved out time for prayer
so that he could enjoy companionship with his Father and keep his mission in the forefront of his mind.
It’s as simple as that. If we were to take time for the Lord each day, even just ten minutes, we would find ourselves more
peaceful and more focused. We would find ourselves open to God’s direction and guidance. We would find ourselves more
calm in tense situations and better equipped to overcome the distractions or fears or anxieties that come our way.
Our God is powerful and loving and patient. He delights when his children seek him in prayer. He enjoys spending time with
us. He loves the opportunities to give us his peace and direction, to teach us and form us. What a privilege it is to have
Almighty God as our own Father!
“Here I am, Father. Teach me how to walk in your presence and peace today.”
Blessings,
Principal
