NEUROPLASTCITY AND HOW
THINGS YOU DO CAN
CHANGE YOUR BRAIN
Silent Launch
• Respond to this question:
Do you think people are born smart or
they work to get smart? Why? Take
a stand!
Expectations
This activity
should be…
•Silent
•Independent
•Work until I say
stop
•Be ready to
share your
answers
What is “malleable
intelligence?”
Students’ View of Intelligence
Can Improve Grades
•Using the guided reading
handout, read the article
independently.
•Be prepared to discuss.
What do you know about
neuroplasticity?
Neuroplasticity
• Neuro + Plastic = Mold Neurons
• The potential the brain has to adapt and
create new neural pathways.
• Fine tune your brain to meet your needs.
• Radio station metaphor.
The Human BRAIN!!!!!
What it really looks like…
This is what’s happening inside your head
RIGHT NOW!!
How did Lebron get so good at basketball?
How do gymnasts make it to the Olympics??? And
win gold medals?
How did Ansel Adams become a legendary
photographer?
Muscle cells
are
working
hard for
these
people…
How do babies learn to speak?
•
Language learning
begins in the womb
at 7 month.
•
4 ½ months after
birth recognize
speech patterns.
•
6 months baby
knows words
mommy and daddy
and can relate them
to her parents.
•
18 months
understands basic
structure of
language.
Malleable Intelligence Theory
Malleable: means that
you can shape or change
something
Intelligence: means your
ability to learn, reason,
and problem solve
Together this means that if you routinely
exercise the brain “muscle,” then you can
shape, change, and increase your ability to
learn.
EXERCISE your brain and you WILL get
smarter.
What exercises could you practice
to improve your photography skills?
• Refine your vision.
• Take more photographs. (10 shots, 1
subject)
• Analyze photographs you love.
• Take a camera everywhere.
• Try new techniques and make mistakes.
INTELLIGENCE is a LEARNED quality
and can be cultivated
• Psychologists who study creative geniuses
point out that the single most IMPORTANT
factor in creative achievement is willingness
to put in a tremendous amount of HARD
WORK and to sustain this effort in the face of
CHALLENGES!
Many people believe that you are born with a
certain LEVEL of intelligence!
• This is FALSE and one of our
most DANGEROUS beliefs.

Only YOU CAN set the limits on
how much you can learn
• As humans we don’t like to
be CONFUSED. We get
frustrated at what we don’t
understand.
• But we tend to LIKE what
we do understand.
• UNDERSTANDING any
subject in school or any skill
you are developing is
something you must work at
to accomplish.
Michael Jordan was cut from his
High School basketball team
• But he didn’t QUIT
• Success is GUARANTEED
if you NEVER GIVE UP!
• If you don’t understand
something, keep going until
you get it 100%
• Like Michael Jordan, you
MUST be willing to keep
going, even when you don’t
get it the first, second, or
third time.
Don’t be afraid to make
mistakes...
we grow from our failures.
Famous Failures
• Thomas Edison: Conducted experiments on his
concepts 9,000 times before creating the light bulb.
• Post It Notes: A scientist at 3M Company was working
on a super strong adhesive and failed...instead he
created the reusable adhesive that was later utilized as
sticky notes.
• Chocolate Chip Cookies: Ruth Wakefield who owned
Toll House Inn was trying to make her chocolate cookie
recipe and realized she was out of chocolate. She broke
sweet chocolate into cookie dough, hoping it would melt
into the cookie while baking...instead she invented
chocolate chip cookies.
• Colonel Sanders: His famous chicken recipe was
rejected 1,009 times before a restaurant accepted it.
