The Acid/Base Square:
This square helps convert between [H+], pH, pOH, and [OH-]
Example Calculations:
a) What is the pH of a 0.050 M HNO3?
Since we are dealing with an acid, we know the [H+]…
pH = -log[H+]
pH = -log[0.050]
pH = 1.3 = acidic
b) Find the hydroxide ion concentration of 3.010-2 M HCl.
[H+][OH-] = 1.0  10-14
[3.0  10-2][OH-] = 1.0  10-14
[OH-] = 3.3  10-13 M = acidic
c) What is the molarity of HBr in a solution that has a pOH of 9.6?
pH + pOH = 14
H+ = 10-pH
pH + 9.6 = 14
H+ = 10-4.4
pH = 4.4
[H+] = 3.98  10-5 M HBr = acidic
