SPONSORSHIP PACKAGE
Now in our 9th year, Tales from the South is a weekly NPR show that features Southerners
reading their own true stories in front of a live audience during dinner at various locally-owned
restaurants and other venues throughout Arkansas. Our home station is the University of Arkansas at
Little Rock's KUAR, and we are heard on multiple public radio stations across the country and satellite
radio around the world. We are distributed by Public Radio Exchange (PRX) to multiple public radio
stations throughout the country. We are also syndicated by World Radio Network (WRN) and are heard
six times a week on WRN Europe, WRN Asia, and WRN Africa; twice a week on RTE, Ireland’s Public
Broadcasting Service; once a week on Poland’s Public Radio; and once a week on World Radio Paris, the
only broadcast licensed to broadcast in English in Paris. Podcasts are available on Stitcher Smart Radio,
the NPR website, the KUAR website, the PRX website, and the Tales from the South website. In 2012 we
won PRX's Zeitfunk Award for Most Licensed Debut Producer, and in 2013 we won a Governors' Arts
Award, were in the top 6 storytelling shows on Stitcher Smart Radio (with This American Life,
StoryCorps, The Moth, Risk! and Snap Judgment), and won a 2014 Henry Award through Arkansas Parks
and Tourism. In June 2014 Tales from the South was included in The Encyclopedia of Arkansas History
and Culture. Tales recently partnered with Snap Judgment and our stories are now heard there, too. Tales
is on the Arkansas Arts Council's Arts on Tour Roster and is presented by William F. Laman Public
Library, with additional support provided by the Oxford American Magazine, the Writers' Colony at
Dairy Hollow, AY Magazine, UALR's Department of Rhetoric and Writing, and the North Little Rock
Visitors' Bureau. Live shows are at multiple restaurants and venues throughout Central Arkansas and the
rest of the state.
Tales relies on underwriting in order to stay on the air and hold live recordings. All sponsorships
help with the production and operation costs for the radio program. Only a few sponsorship opportunities
are available for each show and are limited to certain types of businesses, such as yours, due to strict NPR
guidelines. There are additional opportunities for our podcast sponsorships, too.
Please read the enclosed material to see how your business or organization can participate in this
special experience. I will call you within the next week to set up a time to visit with you, or you can

Mission
“Tales from the South” provides the opportunity for Southerners from all walks of life
and from the South (defined as the Confederate States: Texas, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana,
Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, North Carolina,
South Carolina, Georgia and Florida) to record their written true stories in front of a live
audience to be aired on local, national, and international radio, satellite radio, and preserved as
podcasts.
History
The show has been on the air since 2005 on UALR Public Radio (KUAR) and went
international with World Radio Network (WRN) in 2011. We are distributed by Public Radio
Exchange (PRX), allowing easy access to our show for radio stations and producers. In 2010 we
revamped the show from a once-a-month program to a once-a-week event, including dinner and
the show, at Starving Artist Café in the downtown Argenta Arts District of North Little Rock,
Arkansas. We also added music and began a monthly “Tin Roof Project,” a special edition of the
show in which a famous Southerner shares a personal story followed by an interview session
with host Paula Martin Morell. Our podcasts were picked up by Stitcher Smart Radio in 2013
and now represent a substantial portion of our listening audience. In 2013 Tales was invited join
the Arkansas Arts Center Arts on Tour Program and began touring around the state, offering
communities the opportunity to showcase their area, as we use storytellers, musicians, and artists
from the host’s region for the show. Starving Artist Café closed in May 2014, and Tales now
travels to multiple restaurants and venues throughout the state.
Objectives
Tales from the South is uniquely Southern, in that while we don't require stories are set in
the South (though a majority are), writers must be either originally from the South or live here
currently. The distinct Southern art of storytelling—rich in language, detail, and voice—is alive
in all of them. Contributors are from all walks of life and include professional writers as well as
those who have never been published.
Our program strives to keep the Southern art of storytelling alive by providing all
Southerners with the opportunity to write, edit with assistance from our editors, and then share
their story with the world. While we believe everyone has a story to tell, our show is also focused
on bringing each story to its maximum potential in order to reach a listening crowd on both
emotional and intellectual levels. We partner with different organizations and programs to offer a
platform for all kinds of voices to share their story, from children of military personnel
(Operation Military Kids) to The Arkansas Literary Festival to the Arkansas Shakespeare
Festival, and many more.
The Live Recording
Tales from the South is a 30-minute weekly radio show recorded in front of a live audience
at various local restaurants and other venues throughout Arkansas. The show is created,
produced, and hosted by Paula Martin Morell, MFA, in conjunction with Temenos Publishing
Company. Each Tuesday, Southerners read their own true stories, which range from funny to
sad, to enlightening to touching. Although the show itself is unrehearsed, the literary memoirs
have been worked on for weeks leading up to the recording. The night includes dinner and a
show and is open to the public. The event is a cross between a house concert and a reading/show,
with incredible food and great company.
The first Tuesday of every month, we feature a prominent Southerner on a special edition of
the show we call “Tin Roof Project.” Past Tin Roofers have included bestselling author Grif
Stockley, journalist Suzi Parker, bestselling author Mara Leveritt, Broadway star Lawrence
Hamilton, White House Diarist Janis Kearney, TV and book personality P. Allen Smith, awardwinning actress Natalie Canerday, playwright Graham Gordy, author Kevin Brockmeier,
singer/songwriter Steve Azar, author Jay Jennings, ESPN producer and host Jerry McKinnis,
actor Judge Reinhold, Arkansas Supreme Justice Jack Holt, Sweet Potato Queen Jill Conner
Browne, fashion designer Korto Momolu, New York Times crossword constructor Vic Fleming,
Mossy Oak executive Bobby Cole, bestselling author Laura Parker Castoro, U.S. Senator David
Pryor, singer/songwriter Jimbo Mathus, photographer Andrew Kilgore, painter and sculptor
Kevin Kresse, and many more. Each Tin Roofer reads his/her story, followed by an informal
interview with Paula Morell and audience questions.
During dinner and before the storytelling, we provide live music by different Southern
musicians, who continue the storytelling tradition and play everything from folk to blues to
bluegrass, and more. Acclaimed blues guitarist Mark Simpson plays the blues live each week
during the taped portion of the radio show.
Our Reach
Each week we our live audience will range from 70-200 guests. Historically, 80% of these
are first-timers to the live show. Each month, one of our stories is featured in AY (About You)
Magazine, Arkansas’ leading lifestyle magazine, as well as on their website.
Our shows are archived as podcasts on the NPR website, the KUAR website, the PRX
website, Stitcher Smart Radio, and the Tales from the South website. Shows can be heard
indefinitely. We air locally on Thursdays at 7pm on KUAR (FM 89.1) in Central Arkansas and
on KUAF (Fayetteville) on Saturday afternoons at 3:30 pm.
We are heard on multiple Public Radio stations around the country, and are in the process of
marketing to many more. We are distributed by PRX (Public Radio Exchange), heard on NPR
Now Satellite Radio, and are one of the top storytelling shows on Stitcher Smart Radio. Along
with Public Radio stations, we are also heard on Satellite, Internet, and Cable TV stations
worldwide via WRN Europe, WRN Asia, and WRN Africa, as well as RTE in Ireland. We are
accessible to an audience of over 130 million listeners worldwide.

In addition to our live show and radio broadcasts, we also create podcasts of all of our shows,
which preserves the show and makes it accessible to another audience. Our main podcast service,
Stitcher Smart Radio, hosts over 23,000 radio shows and podcasts. In our first year with Stitcher
(2013), we were one of six finalists for Best Storytelling Show (with This American Life, Snap
Judgment, StoryCorps, Risk!, and The Moth) out of thousands of storytelling shows. Our
listening base has grown considerably via our Stitcher podcast, and we are consistently ranked in
the top 300 shows (out of 23,000) and on the top half of the Top 100 Society and Culture Shows.
We currently appear in 1400 playlists on Stitcher, Because our Stitcher podcasts do not have the
strict public radio advertising restrictions, we are able to offer advertising opportunities to reach
this unique audience.
Storytelling Makes a Difference
Today more and more people use social media and e-mail to jot down thoughts, opinions,
and events happening in their lives; unfortunately, these amazing stories are not adequately
preserved for memories’ sake or for future generations. Reliance on technology for
communication has also alleviated the all-important need for us to verbally interact with others.
Because of our ability to communicate virtually with anyone and everyone around the world,
cultural distinctions are slowly diminishing. Our radio program is aware of the impact of this
evolution in human communication, but embraces these changes as methods to stay in touch with
our listeners and supporters, to share their stories with the world, and to widen global
understanding of Southern culture in the U.S. We adapt to our changing world by: 1) allowing
everyone from the Southern region of the U.S., regardless of literary background, to share and
interact with a live audience through the art of storytelling; 2) archiving of each show through
PRX and podcasts, audiovisual, and written transcripts to better preserve our individual histories;
and 3) keeping the art of storytelling, a longstanding tradition in Southern culture, alive, through
both music and oral history.

who host the show, we create a more attractive destination and showcase the area both regionally

organizations that support it. We are pleased to offer you these outstanding sponsorship
opportunities.
