Lab Summary – Pillbug Behavior

Due Friday, September 18 (as a hard copy to Mr. Bradley by 3:15 PM)

A lab summary in AP Biology will have the following elements:

1.

A descriptive title: Your title should give the reader a clear understanding of what is being tested

(independent variable and dependent variable should be mentioned).

2.

Introduction: an approximately 1 page no more than 1 side, double spaced, 12 pt Times font)

explanation of the experiment performed. It should briefly address the reason for the experiment, the hypothesis (explanatory and/or null), and the lab protocols (how the lab data was collected).

3.

Results: All applicable tables and graphs. All tables and graphs should have a descriptive title (a title that explains what the data is showing). Tables and figure titles should be numbered for easier citation (i.e. Fig 1, Table 1, etc). Graphs need axis titles with units expressed, values on the axis should be spaced correctly showing correct numerical increments (you may make your axis show a narrower range of values if necessary). Graphs should also have a caption describing trends. Graphs that have more than one treatment (more than 1 line) should have a clear legend with data points/lines distinguished so that they can be viewed in black and white.

Validity of the data should be addressed by showing some measurement of accuracy (standard deviation, Chi-square, SEM/95% CI). (Created using a program like Excel, preferably).

4.

Analysis: Address all data – data should be cited within the analysis (i.e. “In Figure 1, …”). First, address the validity of the data by interpreting the measurements of accuracy. Finally, explain the biological reason for the trends. Research (outside of the textbook and notes) done to make these explanations should be cited within the body of the analysis, with a full bibliography (in

APA format) listed on a separate page. (2-3 pages double spaced, 12 pt font)

Pillbug Behavior Requirements/Rubric

1.

Correct format (length, typed, spacing, all parts included, minimal grammar mistakes) – 3 pts

2.

Introduction – 10 pts

3.

Results – a.

Table 1 – a table showing the 95% CI calculation for each sample (8 pts) b.

Figure 1 – a graph of the means of samples for each treatment (control, 2 experimental treatments). Graph should include error bars for that show the 95% Confidence

Interval. (8 pts) c.

Table 2 – a table that shows the Chi-square calculation for the null hypothesis (of 1 experimental treatment) that the control (expected) and experimental (observed) treatments should not show significantly different behaviors (6 pts)

4.

Analysis a.

Did the pillbugs demonstrate taxis? Explain the significance of the data in terms of the

95% CI (overlap?) and Chi-square analysis – identify the p-value for the calculated chisquare. Use APA format for your data – be sure to identify sample size (N) (6 pts) b.

Describe the characteristics of the pillbug (research at least 1 outside source – cannot be

“Wikipedia” or “about.com” or a basic reference site) that can be used to explain its orientation preferences. (6 pts)

5.

Works Cited a.

Source for analysis listed (and cited in the body of the analysis) in APA format (use

Purdue’s OWL site for APA format guidelines). (3 pts)
