Course Description:
Spanish 1 is designed for students with little or no previous study of Spanish. This course serves as an introduction to the Spanish language: pronunciation, functional vocabulary related to everyday life, cultural information and basic grammatical structures. The course emphasizes a focus on acquiring four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing, all within the target language. Upon completion, students should be able to comprehend and respond with grammatical accuracy to spoken and written Spanish as well as demonstrate cultural awareness.
Course Objectives:
Master common vocabulary terms and phrases, including personal contexts such as greetings, family, school, hobbies, and going out
Comprehend a wide range of grammar patterns, including the conjugation of regular and irregular verbs in the present and preterit, using reflexive verbs, asking questions, and making comparisons
Analyze and compare cultural practices, products, and perspectives of various Spanish speaking countries with your own
Generate language incorporating basic vocabulary and grammar patterns using the four different language competencies
Read, write, speak, and listen for meaning in basic Spanish

Work Make-Up/Tardiness Policy
Make-up work and tests are allowed for students who have obtained appropriate permission.
The responsibility for arranging makeup tests, quizzes, and work lies with the student. If a student misses an assignment, they will receive a failing assignment grade unless a prior arrangement is made with the instructor
. If a student is absent from class with permission, they will be required to turn in their homework the following day, even if their class section does not meet the following day.
Classroom
Students are expected to exemplify and enact the Hyde philosophy, especially as it relates to an academic setting. Computers, cell phones, and electronic dictionaries are prohibited unless specifically permitted by the instructor.
Assessment:
Achievement: 75% of final year grade
30% Performance Assessments - may include take-home projects, reports, presentations and exams.
30% Tests/Quizzes - may be announced or unannounced and frequent in order to assess your level of understanding.
30% Homework/Class work - given daily.
10% Final exam/project - given at the end of each trimester.
Effort: 25% of final year grade
50% Homework completion and preparedness – Student are expected to complete their homework on time and to the best of their ability in order to achieve success in this class. Additionally, students are expected to arrive prepared mentally for each class with the proper materials.
50% Participation – Evaluated by student, peers, and teacher.
