This course intends to provide an overview and analysis of China’s foreign relations since
the founding of the People’s Republic in 1949. It discusses the policy making process in
China’s foreign relations in t he context of the domestic political, economic and social
changes. It is important for students to be aware of the long, difficult and significant
journey that China has covered in less than 60 years before coming to where it is and
bracing itself for the challenges lying ahead.
China’ s economy has gained rapid growth since 1978 when it embarked on economic
reforms and opening up policies initiated by Mr. Deng Xiao-ping, and because of its size,
dynamic growth, and continuing reform policies, China has clearly become a major
participant in the world economy. The rapid growth of Chinese economy has been widely
believed as a miracle. Students outside China are thus advised to understand what has
happened to China’s internal and external economic development in the last three
decades. This course is thus designed to provide students with a general picture of
Chinese economic reforms, opening up, and business development, and to introduce
students to a better understanding of many elements of China’ s emergence and its
potential role in the world economy.
With more than 4,000 years of recorded history, China is known as one of the cradles of
the world’s oldest civilizations and has an extremely rich cultural heritage. The aim of this
course is to give a brief introduction to some fundamental aspects of Chinese culture,
with an emphasis upon things and elements that are typically Chinese and worth
knowing by those who are interested in this country and its culture. In quite a few cases,
an introductory account of the historical background will be given for the sake of a better
understanding of the topic under discussion. Classes will be accompanied by visits or
practices of the students. The main contents include: Chinese ancient philosophy, religion,
art, music, kungfu, education, cuisine and tea culture, traditional festivals, etc.

civilizations, Chinese civilization has great contribution to the world history, and has
also been benefited from the communication with other civilizations. Students in
