Created in August 1961 by the East Germans
with support from the Soviet Union.
Berlin Wall- a concrete wall that separates the
two parts of Berlin (referring to the East and
West).
Prevent more refugees from escaping.
Cause for the creation of the
wall

*Outflow of East Germans, who
migrated to West Berlin.
-This is an embarrassment for East Germany (People
leave them for the other part of the city).
-Their economy is negatively impacted.
-Shows how Soviet Union lack control over Eastern
Europe.

Cuba before 1962

Cuba was dominated by the United
States since the Spanish-American
War (in other words, since 1898).
Events leading up to the Cuban Missile
Crisis

Fidel Castro leads an *insurgency in Cuba
(1957).
-result: Dictatorship of Flugencio Batista collapsed
(1959)

Communist government in Cuba after the
resign of Batista.
*Insurgency: A rebellion to overthrow a constituted government.

Occurred in 1962 during the Cold War.
Nuclear missiles secretly set up in Cuba by the Soviet
Union (1962). Americans discover this.
-result: President Kennedy blockaded Cuba, stopped the import
of new missiles into Cuba, and the removal of all missiles that were
already installed.
After the Cuban Missile
Crisis




Khrushchev (Russia’s communist leader), loses some of his
influence towards the communist leaders by giving in to the
Americans.
Other communist countries lose faith in the Soviet Union
(USSR)
Chinese influence (communist country) increased.
Other countries and the Soviet Union want more strength so
that they can stand up against the U.S. next time.
