This is CKNY and I'm Anita Pierce with weather. We couldn't ask for a better day for the first day of Spring. Right now it's fifteen degrees and clear. We're expecting blue skies throughout the day. Though there is only a ten percent chance of showers, this good weather can't last forever. It's raining cats and dogs up north, so we should see rain by morning. Don't forget your umbrella tomorrow. Now, stay tuned for local news. How to describe the weather: Weather Reports 2. Hi, I'm Jesse Williams. This is your weekend weather report. This morning we're seeing sun with cloudy periods as well as a few flurries. Right now I am at the top of Mount Raven where it is plus two and expected to rise to about six degrees by noon. Overnight temperatures will probably drop to at least minus seven. Tomorrow's forecast calls for more flurries with a high of zero and a low of minus twelve. With the wind chill factor, that could put us at a record low of minus twenty. Conditions are perfect for skiing this weekend, but if you're heading out to the slopes tomorrow, please remember to bundle up to avoid frostbite. We'll go back to the newsroom now for a look at what's in sports. How to describe the weather: Weather Reports 3. Good morning, this is Alonzo Jacob with your Monday weather report. The heat-wave that slowed everybody down this weekend is showing no signs of letting up this week. Our meteorologists suggest that today's temperature could climb to as high as 40 degrees Celsius by the late afternoon. Right now, only an hour after sunrise, the temperature here at the airport is already 29 degrees. However, there is relatively no humidity in the air, so it feels quite comfortable out here at the moment. Unfortunately, there is also no rain in the forecast for the next five days. This is bad news for the thirsty forest fires that are raging across the interior of our province. Looks like setting up a tent in the backyard may be the only way to catch some sleep tonight if you don't have airconditioning. That's all for today's weather. Stay tuned for the morning traffic report. 1. Sample descriptions Sample description 1 • The picture shows a big group of young people having a barbeque in a park. I think they are from Japan. • There are about 20 people in the group, and most of them are wearing jeans and blue or darkcolored shirts. They are having a lot of fun, and some of them are making faces at the camera. Everybody is trying to get in the picture. • They are in some kind of a park or a forest. They could be on holiday, or it could be a school trip. I don't know what they are cooking. It could be hamburger, but it could also be some special Japanese food! 2 Sample description 2 • The picture shows a man holding a fish and a trophy. • He must have won a fishing competition. The fish he is holding isn't very big, so perhaps he caught some other ones, or else there was a time limit! • He's wearing a baseball cap so the weather must be nice. The man's about 45 years old. He's standing in a boat or else near a lake or a big river. I can see some boats behind him. • The trophy has some names on it. Perhaps they are last year's winners, and the competition is held every year. 3 Sample description 3 • The picture shows three girls waiting for a plane in the departure lounge at an airport. • They are laughing and having a lot of fun, even though I think they have been waiting a long time. I think they've been waiting a long time because they look tired, especially the girl on the left. She is leaning her head on her friend's shoulder. The girl on the right has finished reading a paper, and it looks like they have been drinking some Seven-Up while they were waiting. As well as that, the airport is crowded, and there are a lot of other people waiting for the next plane. • They all have some hand luggage, but I can't see any big bags, so they must have checked in their baggage already. They are wearing coats and hats and scarves, so the weather must be cold at the airport or where they are going. • http://www.writefix.com/pet/petspeak/waitingplanetxt.htm 4 Sample description 4 • The photograph shows a football player getting a red card from a referee at a soccer match. • The player who is getting the card is on the white team. He is turning away and looks disgusted. I think he can't believe it. The other players in the picture are all from the other team. They look very happy with the referee's decision. The other team has a blue and white kit. • The referee is holding the red card high in the air. He is being very clear - I think he is quite strict and is not allowing any discussion. The stadium is crowded, and it is difficult to see where the players are from, but it must be an important match. • http://www.writefix.com/pet/petspeak/redcardtxt.htm 5 Sample description 5 • The picture shows three astronauts waiting for takeoff. • The astronauts are wearing bright orange uniforms or flight suits. Two of them have US flags on their shoulders so they must be American, but I can't see where the other one is from. • The astronaut nearest the camera looks nervous. I think he is worried or anxious about the flight. Maybe he is thinking about what he has to do on this mission, or maybe he is thinking about his family. Behind him there is a scientist or an official. • They could be waiting for the space shuttle to get ready, or perhaps there is a problem with the weather and their lift-off has been delayed. • http://www.writefix.com/pet/petspeak/astronauttxt.htm 6 Sample description 6 • This is an image of a busy street in an Asian country. As well as bicycles there are motor vehicles on this street, so it is obviously a high traffic area. A few of the cyclists have bicycles attached to their baskets. • This suggests that bicycles may be their primary source of transportation. From the architecture it appears to be a tourist or shopping district. There are two tall buildings in the distance, which is likely where the business district is located. • There seems to be some confusion about direction of traffic flow. The cyclists are travelling on both sides of the centre line and are going in the same direction. The cars, on the other hand, are going two different ways. 7 Sample description 6 • The picture shows three boys in a small boat on a river. The river looks cold and wet and the water is moving fast. • One of the boys is holding a paddle or an oar. He is looking down at the water and he looks worried. Maybe he thinks that they are going to hit something or fall out. • The boy in the middle is smiling. He is enjoying the adventure! He's only wearing a teeshirt, so maybe it is not very cold. The third boy is looking at something up the river, near a bridge or a wall. There could be something coming, or maybe there are some others in a boat. • I think they are Arab students on a holiday or a summer school. I hope they are enjoying themselves! 8 Sample description 8 • The picture shows a family visiting their new baby in hospital. It's the evening, because the light is on, so the father must have brought his children after work or school. • There are two children beside the baby, a boy and a girl. The boy is a little older than his sister. He's about six or seven. He looks proud. The girl looks very excited to have a new sister. • The father has his arm around his children. He looks proud as well. The mother is sitting at the left. She looks happy but a little tired. • The baby is in the middle. I think it's a girl, because she is wearing pink clothes. The baby is sleeping despite all the noise and excitement. Some ideas to describe someone (example) Nicholas is an old man, chubby and soft. His belly shakes like a bowl full of jelly when he laughs, and he laughs a lot. His hair is snow-white, and so is his beard. When you see him, and hear his loud "Ho, ho, ho!" you feel happy, as if you are with the world's most loving grandfather. His life's goal is giving gifts to children all over the world. Most of his time is spent making the gifts, although nobody really knows where his workshop is or what goes on there! It's all a little mysterious, but somehow he manages to give every child something once a year. Nicholas has a very positive attitude, and is usually in a good mood, although he can be quite firm if he thinks that you have been naughty. He smells exactly like Christmas should smell, and whenever you smell peppermint and evergreens, you think of him. I would like to tell you about a man I talk about with my friends • He is generous and kind with everyone. He always likes to help someone, and doesn't expect anything in return. He is in charge of a private charity association in his home town which helps many families. It assists with habitat, education for poor children, and health. • He is my relative, and is living far away from my home town. Whenever I see him I like to sit with him and have a talk. He is the kind of person you admire, the way he talks, and the topics he discusses and he never talks about nonsense topics. • Sometimes, if I have a problem, I like him to share with me and advise me what to do to solve that problem. He is always telling me to be honest with myself and respect others' opinions.
