Discuss referring to the prescribed text and two
texts of Your own choosing.
Before starting your essay break down the statement
you are to discuss and write notes exploring the
meaning behind key words eg:
Balance: counteract, equalize, even out, level, fair
Imbalance: inequality, unevenness
Simple: basic, easy, uncomplicated
Complex: complicated, elaborate, involved

Once you have broken down the statement think
of aspects of belonging that relate to “balance”,

The Proctor’s- Imbalance in their relationship in the
beginning, however, changes towards the end.
The peer group- imbalance; They are controlled by
Abigail and fear her, creating a significant imbalance of
equality within the group. Abigail has the power.
Do the same with 2 texts of your own choosing.
Use samples from your resource files or
texts analysed in class.
Essay structure: Many students need to develop
their essay writing abilities. In order to do this you
need to write more essays! When your teacher
sets an essay for homework it is not because they
are mean, it is because you need to develop your
writing!
-Many students need to develop their grammar,
punctuation, spelling and sentence structure.
-When you are quoting from a text use inverted
commas not brackets.
-You don’t need to introduce the whole title and
composer of a text more than once
-Discuss examples relevant to topic. Don’t waffle
On. Avoid recounting the text.

TEXTS OF YOUR OWN CHOOSING:
-Try and choose a quality text.
-It needs to have interesting language features that
you can discuss to show how meaning is shaped.
-Try and find texts that are original so that
your paper stands out. Many papers discussed
‘Mean girls’ the film, Tayla Swift’s song
‘You belong to me’ and a Katie Perry song.
-Just because a text has the word ‘belong’ in the
heading does not necessarily mean that it is an
effective text to use.
