CD 205 Health, Safety, & Nutrition for the Young Child In order to determine the equivalency of programs and content, we ask that the instructor please complete this document. Listed below are examples of assignments or projects that are required of college students taking the course on campus. We ask that you please briefly explain or provide examples of your assignments or projects that students in your secondary (or adult) level course will have that address each topic and student learning outcome. Please insert your response under each numbered item below. 1. This assignment will be the beginning of your Competency Statements for your CDA Professional Resource File. You will complete the first paragraph of your statement within the following guidelines and rubric requirements: CSI Competency Statement I (To establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment): Begin your Reflective Statement about this Competency Standard with a paragraph describing how your teaching practices meet this Standard. Once you have completed this paragraph, you will put it in your CDA Professional Resource File with paragraphs a, b, and c following. (these will be assigned separately) (SLO 1) 2. Choose and complete a lesson plan for an activity that can be implemented with children and families to promote knowledge of nutrition. May include, but not limited to the following: Eating Healthy Foods Identifying nutritious foods Meal Planning Healthy Meal practices (Use the given Activity Template) (SLO 2) 3. RC I-2: A copy of one weekly menu. In order to complete your related Reflective Competency Statement on the topic, the menu would ideally be one that you have participated in serving to and/or designing for children. If this is not possible, or if you work in a program that does not serve meals, you may substitute a group care menu found on the internet. (More important that the source of the menu will be Reflective Competency Statement I, in which you will discuss your opinions about the menu – what you think are its strengths and/or what you might serve that you think is more appropriate and why.) (SLO 7) This assignment will go in your Professional Resource File under RC – 1 -2. Complete a weekly menu for each of the following age groups utilizing the Child and Adult Food Program Guidelines (CACFP) developed by USDA. www.dhss.mo.gov (Nutrition) O – 4 Months 4 – 7 Months 8 – 11 Months 4. RC I-2: A copy of one weekly menu. In order to complete your related Reflective Competency Statement on the topic, the menu would ideally be one that you have participated in serving to and/or designing for children. This assignment will be the second paragraph of Competency Statement I for your CDA Professional Resource File. You will complete the paragraph of your statement within the following guidelines and rubric requirements: CS I a.: Reflect on the sample menu in the Resource Collection (RC I-2): If you designed the menu, how does it reflect your commitment to children’s nutritional needs? If you did not design it, what are its strengths and/or what would you change? (SLO 7) This paragraph will be included in your Resource File under (RC-I ~ CS a) 6. Written report that includes information on the social aspects of mealtime as well as selfhelp practices for healthy living. (SLO 7) 7. Choose and complete a lesson plan for an activity that can be implemented with children and families to promote knowledge of healthy personal practices. May include, but not limited to the following: Brushing Teeth Washing Hands Bathing Exercise (Use the given Activity Template) (SLO 2) 8. Complete an indoor learning environment that meets licensing standards. (www.dhss.mo.gov ) (SLO 3) Infant Room Preschool Room 9. Complete an outdoor play environment that meets licensing standards. (www.dhss.mo.gov ) (SLO 3) Infant Area Preschool Area 10. This assignment will be the third paragraph of your Competency Statement I for your CDA Professional Resource File. You will complete this paragraph of your statement within the following guidelines and rubric requirements: CS I b.: Reflect on the room environment in which your Verification Visit Observation will occur: How does the room design reflect the way you believe young children learn best? If the room was not designed by you, what do you see as its strengths and/or what would you change? (SLO 3) This paragraph will be included in your Resource File under (RC-I ~ CS b) 11. Three samples of record keeping forms you use/have used. Include an accident report form, an emergency form and a completed tool/form that you have used to observe for and document a child’s developmental/learning progress (Do not include the child’s name). (SLO 3) 12. RC I-1: Your valid and current certificates of completion or cares from a.) any first aid course and b.) An infant/child (pediatric) CPR course offered by a nationallyrecognized training organization (such as American Red Cross or the American Heart Association). Online training is not acceptable. (SLO 5) CPR/ FIRST AID CERTIFICATE that is current. (RC – I) 13. Choose and complete a lesson plan for an activity that can be implemented with children and families to promote knowledge of safety for children and families. May include, but not limited to the following: Fire safety Playground / bicycle /swimming Stranger Danger Household safety (Use the given Activity Template) (SLO 2) 14. Written report reviewing elements of both abuse and neglect. (SLO 4) 15. RC VI – 3: Summaries of the legal requirements in your state regarding child abuse and neglect (including contact information for the appropriate agency in your state) and Mandatory Reporting Guidelines. (SLO 4) 16. RC I-3: A sample of your weekly plan that includes goals for children’s learning and development, brief descriptions of planned learning experiences, and also accommodations for children with special needs (whether for children you currently serve or may serve in the future). Indicate the age group(s) for which the plan is intended. (SLO 6) Complete a weekly lesson plan that includes lessons that will promote children’s knowledge in the areas of: Health (at least one activity) Nutrition (at least one activity) Safety (at least one activity) You may choose any of the three previous areas for the remaining two activities. (Use Essentials lesson plan template given in Blackboard) This will be included in your Professional Resource File under RC I-3. 17. This assignment will be the fourth paragraph of Competency Statement I for your CDA Professional Resource File. You will complete this paragraph of your statement within the following guidelines and rubric requirements: CS I c.: Reflect on the weekly plan you included in your Resource Collection (RC I-3). How does this plan reflect your philosophy of what young children need on a weekly basis? If the plan was not designed by you, what do you see as its strengths and/or what would you change? (SLO 6) This paragraph will be included in your Resource File under (RC-I ~ CS c).
