Glossary of English Assurance Words
You will create a glossary of the English vocabulary words which appear
on the TAKS. You will use advanced tools and formatting functions in
MS Word as well as the Internet to create your glossary.
These are the
assurance words
for English TAKS –
these words will
most likely appear
on your test
Save your document as lastname_English Assurance Words
Your glossary will have a cover page, a table of contents, and a glossary of 20 words. The words
are listed at the end of this document. Select the list for your grade level (Soph, Junior, or Senior)
Cover Page: use the tool in MS Word to create your cover page; select any layout that you
would like. On the cover page include at least: your name, the title to your glossary, and the date
it was produced (perhaps the due date)
Table of Contents (TOC): use the tabs in MS Word to create your table of contents. At the
bottom of your TOC, include a citation of your online dictionary resources. This is an example
of a completed TOC:
Glossary Entry: for each word, your glossary entry will include the word, a definition, an
antonym, and a synonym. The definitions should be a copy/paste from your online dictionary.
For the antonym and synonym use the tools within MS Word (for some words you’ll need to
search the Net). Use a hanging indent and tab to format the paragraphs. A sample glossary entry
is:
Deconstruct: to take apart or examine in order to reveal the basis or composition of often with
the intention of exposing biases, flaws, or inconsistencies
Antonym: reconstruct
Synonyms: break down, cut, analyze, dissect
General formatting: Be sure to format your text professionally, use consistent fonts, decide
on appropriate font size (10, 12), and use font styles (bold, italics) to enhance the visual layout of
your glossary. Place page numbers at the bottom of each glossary page. To start the page
counting after the cover page and TOC, you’ll need to access the Page Number Format dialogue
box, and make these adjustments:
