Workshop Goals
Raise awareness about Universal Design
for Learning so that teachers can:
•Use collaborative planning to increase the options
for presentation of content, engagement of learners,
and representation of mastery
•Consult with curriculum, technology, and media
specialists to support the learning of all students
•Seek professional development to support
universal design
•Explore the use of software to enhance UDL
Universal Design Origin and
Definitions
“Consider the needs of the broadest
possible range of users from the
beginning”
Architect, Ron Mace

Retrofitting
Drawbacks of
Retrofitting
• Each retrofit solves
only one local problem
• Retrofitting can be
costly
• Many retrofits are
UGLY!
Examples of
UD Solutions
Universal Design
• Not one size fits all, but offers
alternatives
• Designed from the beginning,
not added on later
• Increases access
opportunities for everyone
Universal Design for Learning
Snap Shot
Universal does NOT suggest that there is a single
solution that works for everyone.
Employs Flexibility
Includes Alternatives
Sets Appropriate Goals
Separates the Goal from the Methods
Fixes the Curriculum NOT the Learner
