Also optional: Purchase of the Knowsys Level SAT Vocabulary Flashcards app, for Apple. (An Android version should

College Preparation
The SAT prep course consists of two primary sections:

College preparation
 4717 Bailey Road in Pearland, Texas 77584  281-727-1600 
TCCHS – English III Syllabus, Spain 2

SAT preparation.
o General test-taking strategies and critical thinking skills
o Mathematics
o Verbal (including critical reading, and writing)
For the SAT portion of the class, we will cover a variety material from each section of the course every week. We
may be having a math discussion one day, talking about grammar the next, and taking a practice test the next.
Understand that the SAT also jumps around in this fashion, so our minds will grow more agile as we learn to do so
as well.




We will engage in peer grading, because immediate feedback as well as error recognition are keys to
doing well on the SAT and in college.
We also will take several practice tests, as feedback from successful students shows that this is one of the
best ways to improve your own test-taking skills and, therefore, your score.
Because much of the course material here is a review, some of our lessons will be “flipped.” That is, your
homework the previous night will be to research, watch a video, and/or answer some questions or take
notes on a given topic, then be prepared the next day to tackle practice SAT questions on that topic.
In general, homework should not take more than 15-20 minutes on any night when it occurs.
What will we not do in here?
This is neither a math class nor an English class. This course is not designed to teach students math or English
concepts but rather to examine how these are tested on the SAT.
Assignments: Assignments will count either as a daily grade (40%) or a major grade (60%).
By district policy, 60 percent of your grade in this course comes from major assignments, and 40 percent from daily
work. Note, however, that your major assignment grade will not be based solely on how well you perform on the
practice tests we take. Rather, we will examine your improvement on these tests, your recognition and discussion
of your process on test questions, your effort, participation, and the successful completion of class assignments
and projects.
Per Student Handbook
“Absences, Make-Up Work and Grades
Students have one class day per absence day to complete assignments. If the assignment is a long-term project
with a due date that was clearly included on the syllabus, the work is due upon return. Teachers may consider
extenuating circumstances and allow more time. Students who will be absent three or more days may request
work through the counseling office.”
Homework
First, we will not have homework every night. Whenever we do, it should not take you more than 15-30 minute or
so to complete. HOWEVER, any homework assigned will be extremely important for your success in here, and will
be for a grade.
YOU are responsible for checking the web page to see about homework assignments and when they are due,
especially if you are absent.
On your own, you will need to study your SAT vocabulary ten minutes every day.
