EVAN 525 Syllabus COURSE SYLLABUS EVAN 525 CONTEMPORARY EVANGELISM COURSE DESCRIPTION A study of the evangelistic imperative and various methods of personal witnessing. Particular emphasis is given to follow-up, discipleship, and memorizing key Bible verses. RATIONALE Because of the importance of every student being fully prepared in the areas of evangelism and discipleship, EVAN 565 is required for each degree program the seminary offers. I. Defend multiplication as a core value of life and ministry. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND ASSIGNMENTS A. Textbook readings and presentations/notes B. Course Requirements Checklist After reading the Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1. C. Discussion Board Forums (5) For each forum assignment, the student will address the discussion topic in a new thread. The thread must be a minimum of 400 words, supported by course resources, and must be completed no later than Thursday night of the assigned module/week. The student will then reply to at least two other classmate’s threads. Each reply must be a minimum of 100 words and be submitted no later than Sunday night of that same week. Page 2 of 5 EVAN 525 Syllabus D. Testimony The student will submit a testimony in two parts: a “conversion” section and a “recovery” section. The conversion section will discuss how the student became a Christian, and the recovery section will discuss how Jesus helped him or her with a particular problem or life need. A first draft and final draft must be submitted together no later than Sunday night of Module/Week 2. E. Servant Evangelism Reports (3) During this course, the student must plan and participate in 3 servant evangelism projects (at least one done through the authority of the student’s local congregation). The student will write a 1–2-page report on each project according to criteria given in the course. The reports will be submitted at the end of Modules/Weeks 3, 4, and 6 respectively. F. Witnessing Reports (3) During this course, the student is required to share the gospel 3 times (with 3 different people), and at least one encounter should be done through the local church outreach. The student will write a 1-page report on each witnessing encounter, submitting one at the end of Modules/Weeks 5, 7, and 8 respectively. G. Book Critiques (2) The student will submit critiques about two of the assigned textbooks. Each book critique will be a formal paper, 5–7 pages in length, and will include the bibliographical entry, author information, content summary, and an evaluation. A template is provided. Each critique must be submitted no later than Sunday night of the assigned module/week. H. Evangelism Vision Paper After thoroughly working through the six-week study, Minister to Others, the student will develop an 8–10-page, Turabian-style paper centered on the vision and challenge of what God is doing in his or her life in the area of evangelism. The paper will address questions provided in Blackboard. It must be submitted no later than Friday night of Module/Week 8. I. Quizzes (3) Each quiz is made up of 15 objective, open-book questions covering specified material from the Wheeler and Leach book. Late Assignment Policy If the student is unable to complete an assignment on time, then he or she must contact the instructor immediately by email. Assignments that are submitted after the due date without prior approval from the instructor will receive the following deductions: 1. Late assignments submitted within one week of the due date will receive a 10% deduction. 2. Assignments submitted more than one week late will receive a 20% deduction. 3. Assignments submitted two weeks late or after the final date of the class will not be accepted. 4. Late Discussion Board threads or replies will not be accepted. Special circumstances (e.g. death in the family, personal health issues) will be reviewed by the instructor on a case-by-case basis. D. Style Guidelines All assignments for this course are to be formatted in accordance with the latest edition of the Turabian style manual (A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations). Discussion assignments and essay examinations may use the parenthetical citation style. All other written assignments should use the footnote citation style.
