Information that is covered serves as a solid foundation for all students in health sciences or health occupation, regardless of the particular health care profession they are interested in pursuing. Topics include: careers in health care, legal and ethical responsibilities, professionalism, interaction between and reactions of patients in normal and altered mental states, patient and personal safety. Cultural diversity, OSHA standards, lifting, moving, emergency assessment and response. PREREQUISITE Access to course text book. Computer access to the internet and use of JCC’s JetNet. ASSOCIATE DEGREE OUTCOMES The course goals and objectives incorporate specific Associate Degree Outcomes (ADOs) established by the JCC Board of Trustees, administration, and faculty. These goals are in concert with four-year colleges and universities, and reflect input from the professional communities we serve. Students wishing to experience success with this course should expect to participate as in any traditional course by listening to and reviewing lecture materials, completing reading prior to class, completing book chapter reviews, and assignments. Week 13. Chapter 16 & 17, lecture, chapter review due. Finish the ethic paper presentations (3 to 5) minutes and class discussion with group. Week 14 Chapter 18, lecture, chapter review due. Final Exam Review. Week 15 Complete Final Exam. This is a comprehensive exam over all the chapters in the book. 3 Page |4 COLLABORATION The instructor and JCC encourages students to collaborate in study groups, work teams and with lab partners. Each student should take the responsibility for accurately representing his/her contributions. FACILITATOR’S RESPONSIBILITIES To facilitate learning, provide and explain the necessary materials for each student to understand the assignments and develop course performance objectives to competency levels. Knowledge gained from this course, shall aid students in the clinical experiences they require in an allied health or nursing career. Asking questions is expected of you. STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITIES Students are expected to participate and be prepared for each session and ready to demonstrate their ability to meet the performance objectives. It is assumed by the facilitator that all assignments and reading will be completed on time prior to class. That is so the student may have the best opportunity to understand the lecture material and ask questions. To explain and make inquiries of difficult topics. Reading assignments does not replace lecture content nor do the lectures replace or eliminate the need to complete reading assignments. The pace necessary for this course makes it very difficult for one to catch up if they have fallen behind. It is highly expected that students utilize as many references as possible to enhance their learning and understanding. It is the student’s responsibility to utilize internet resources. EXPECTATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS Class begins on time. Students are expected to have completed reading assignments prior to the start of class. CLASS ATTENDENCE IS EXPECTED AND NECESSARY. IF ABSENT, ALL ASSIGNMENTS ARE EXPECTED UPON THE STUDENT’S RETURN TO CLASS. If you are unable to be in class for the entire session, please make arrangements at the beginning of the class with the instructor. Failure to make these arrangements will result in a no show for attendance. If you miss 4 or more classes, you may have a failing grade in this course. ETHICS PAPER REQUIREMENTS AND CRITERIA Ethics papers may be over the medical ethical topic of your choice, approved by the instructor. A literature search will be necessary to investigate the medical ethical dilemma and how health care is impacted by its existence. All papers require references for full credit. Papers are due on the 12th week. Late papers will be dropped one grade. Papers are to be typed. They are to be written in complete and concise sentence structure to receive full points. State the problem, how it impacts health care today and in the next decade. Present a variety of viewpoints including your own, and conclude with a summary paragraph. Points will be eliminated for spelling errors. A complete bibliography is required. APA and MLA format will be accepted. Minimum five sources required, published no more than five years ago. Points will be eliminated for lack of required resources. This paper is to be five(minimum) to seven pages in content not including the references. Presentations are 3 to 5 minutes in duration. All components need to be included for full credit. The quality of content will be considered when graded. Review Chapter Five on Ethical Responsibilities in Healthcare. GRADING 95-100% = 4.0 25% = QUIZZES 90-94% = 3.5 25% = CHAPTER REVIEWS 85-89% = 3.0 25% = ETHICS PAPER/CAREER PAPER 80-84% = 2.5 25% = FINAL EXAM 75-79% = 2.0 70-74% = 1.5 65-69% = 1.0 60-64% = 0.5 NOTE: Unannounced learning quizzes will occur throughout the course. Point credit for chapter reviews completed on due date, late half Below 60%= 0.0 NOTE: A 2.0 or “C” is a passing grade. Only courses with passing grades count toward graduation. Other colleges transfer in only courses with passing grades. Additionally, earning less than a 2.0 in a class results in not being able to participate in the next level of courses in a discipline which requires this course as a pre-requisite. If you attempt to register for the next course sequence and have not passed the pre-requisite course, you will be dropped from the 5 Page |6 class. IT IS EXPECTED THAT EACH STUDENT WILL PARTICIPATE REGULARLY WITH CLASS DISCUSSION. GRADES WILL BE POSTED ON-LINE AT JCC E-SERVICE AT THE END OF THE. This is the first-step in acquiring the appropriate accommodations to facilitate your learning.” FEDERAL TITLE IV FUNDING REQUIREMENTS In compliance with the federal requirements, as well as college initiatives, reporting of student participation in classes will occur at three designated times each semester. These grades verify or confirm that a student is participating in class or not participating. Definitions of Participation/Progress Symbols – H – student not doing acceptable work and needs Help to be successful Q- has not participated and instructor believes student has unofficially withdrawn (Quit). Student will be dropped/withdrawn from the class. V – The instructor Verifies that the student is participating and doing acceptable work. ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY Academic honesty is expected of all students. It is the ethical behavior that includes producing their own work and not representing others’ work as their own either by plagiarism by cheating or by helping others to do so. Faculty members who suspect a student of academic dishonesty may penalize the student by taking appropriate action up to and including assigning a failing grade for the paper, project, report, exam, or the course itself. Instructors MUST document instances of academic dishonesty, beyond those of a minor nature, in writing to the academic dean. In the event of a dispute, all parties should follow the Academic Complaint policy. This policy is in the student rights and responsibilities (JCC Student Handbook). SECURITY AND SAFETY JCC has security guards available for security of students, faculty, staff and visitors. In case of emergency, each classroom has a “In Case of Emergency” directional map located near the classroom door. THIS SYLLABUS IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE AS NEEDED.
