Cathedral High School Vision
Cathedral High School, a Catholic institution,
will be the model for all high schools
as she profoundly shapes the way students
think, serve and lead.
Dear Cathedral Parents,
Cathedral High School Mission
Cathedral, a Catholic college preparatory high school,
provides to a diverse group of students opportunities
for spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional
and physical growth through service and academic excellence.
I would like to remind you about the Cathedral Feedback
Form, available for each of you to deliver an anonymous
message to members of the administration: to me, to Lisa
Ford – Vice Principal for Academic Affairs, to Tom Greer – Vice
Principal for Student Affairs, to Jim McLinn, Athletic Director, or to Rolly Landeros, CIO (Technology). To reach this form,
click here or go to the Cathedral website at www.cathedral-irish.org. At the very bottom of the website, please click on the
yellow word “parents,” then on the left select Feed-back Form. The form that comes up allows you to direct your comment
to whomever you choose from those individuals above and to make your comment anonymously or to add your contact
information, if you wish.
Normally, I would like the High Honor Roll and the Honor Roll in this issue, but we have had so many students out
with illnesses that they are still completing their assignments or exams. I will include this listing in next week’s email.

The Spanish Competition Team is starting to form for this year’s competition on
Saturday, April 16, to be held right here at Cathedral for the first time ever! Last year’s
Spanish III team took first place in the state! We are looking to repeat that victory and bring
home victories in the other levels, including the Heritage Speaker category for students who
speak Spanish in the home. All participants must be currently enrolled in a Spanish
class. There is a wide variety of categories, including posters/piñatas; tests for vocabulary,
grammar and scrambled sentences; speaking events; skits; Toro Trivia (conducted in
English!); and new this year: Latin dance and a vocal category! Please see this link for the student survey
http://www.cathedral-irish.org/file.cfm?resourceid=10102&filename=concurso%20survey%202011%2Edoc or email
Mrs. Rose Egan (regan@cathedral-irish.org) if you have any questions about how your student can participate. ¡¡Viva el
equipo de español!
The Purdue Student Engineering Foundation (PSEF) holds an event called Engineering Expo, which is a hands-on,
head-first dive into the world of engineering. Students participating will have the opportunity to explore their
potential in engineering.
 The events include an academic fair in which students can gain insight into various engineering disciplines and
student engineering organizations at Purdue, a quiz bowl where students show off their knowledge, and an
impromptu competition. In this competition students will use math, physics, and engineering principles to solve a
given task with limited time and resources. The results of the quiz bowl and impromptu competition will determine
winners eligible for a total of $3,000 in scholarships.
 The date for Engineering Expo is April 6th, 2011 and will take place in the Purdue Memorial Union; however
students must be registered for the event before February 15th. Registration is $12 per student,
which includes lunch and a Engineering Expo gift. Forms can be found on our website,
psef.purdue.org/expo/. Our website also contains useful dates and information about PSEF as
well as Engineering Expo.
Do not hesitate to contact me through email with any questions or concerns. My email addresses
are szee@purdue.edu or expo@psef.purdue.org.

from 5:30 to 7:00 in the cafeteria. There is no cost for Cathedral parents and their children for the fish

fry, hosted by the Cathedral Family Circle* and the CHS advancement office. We hope you will join us for a casual time of
friendship and family fun before the game! Each family at the fish fry will receive one adult complimentary ticket to the
game OR to Comedy Sportz. So that we know how much fish to prepare, please RSVP to Diane Szymanski at
dszymanski@cathedral-irish.org or 968-7313 by Thursday, January 27. We hope to see you on the evening of January 28!
*The Cathedral Family Circle, a group of parents representing all class years, seeks to advance and promote the school’s
mission by encouraging:
 active involvement in the life of Cathedral
 volunteer and financial participation in support of the Cathedral Fund family of funds.
The Cathedral Family Circle is the parent arm of the Cathedral Fund Cabinet, a network of alumni, parents, grandparents,
faculty/staff, and Board members who partner with the Office of Advancement to cultivate lifelong relationships and foster
Cathedral’s culture of giving throughout the school community.

I am pleased to announce that the Catholic Youth Organization is once again able to provide
Cathedral High School with one-campership (scholarship to attend camp) at Camp Rancho
Framasa in Brown County. This is a six-day session to Traditional (ages 7 – 16) or Adventure (ages
13 – 15) camping and is valued at $425. The camp is coed. If you are interested, please see Mr.
Worland in his office, or contact him at dworland@cathedral-irish.org or at 317/968-7337. You will be
asked to write a 500-word essay and have an interview with one or two Cathedral staff members.
The Guidance Department will be administering the PLAN for freshmen on Saturday, February 12 here in the
SLC. Testing will begin at 8am. The test fee is already included in freshmen fees, so if you have already registered
and paid, please have your student see Mrs. Butler (formerly Ms. Tate) for a refund. Please direct students and
parents to see/contact her to register and/or for additional questions.
 The PLAN is the “pre” ACT or practice ACT. The test will measure a student’s current academic
development. It is also a strong predictor of success on the ACT. There is also an interest inventory component
which will show students what careers fit their interests and can help guide them as they plan out their four years in
high school.
 Deadline for sign-up is Monday, January 24th.
Mrs. Taria Butler
Dear Parents,
On February 14th we will be beginning a program for young women called “ENDOW: Educating on the
Nature and Dignity of Women”. This is a study group that meets once a week for 8 weeks and is open to any female
student. The purpose of this program is to inspire young women with the possibilities of their womanhood, encourage
women to embrace their God-given spiritual and physical gifts, challenge women in service to their families,
community, and church and to support women as they bring their gifts and talents in to the plan that God has laid
for them. Study groups will be led by trained faculty and staff members and we will be using Pope John Paul II’s
encyclical called Letter to Women as well as scripture as part of our study program. If you are interested in
learning more about this program or getting your student involved please contact Charlene Witka
(cwitka@cathedral-irish.org) or Sarah Erotas (serotas@cathedral-irish.org).
Sincerely,

Who wants to earn a big scholarship? If you will not be 19 before Jan. 1, 2011, you are eligible to compete in the
Optimist International speech Contest in late January or mid-February. See Mrs. Scheetz if you are
interested and to get a Registration form. You will need to write a 4-5 minite speech on the
subject: “If I were a leader of the free world, the first issue I would address would be…!”
Think about this; collect your thoughts and see Mrs. Scheetz for more information, help and registration
forms.
***The Optimist club has for the 1st time opened this up to all students not yet 19! Mrs. Scheetz is in Rm.
#3302.
Natalie Kotterman from Butler University will be a full-time practicum student in the Guidance Office this semester.
She will be here each day from 7:30-3:45. Natalie was here first semester one day a week for her internship.
Reminder: It states in the Blue Book that students need to be called in by 9:30
am. Parents/Guardians should be aware that if they are calling after 9:30 a.m., they must speak
to an actual person to insure that their student’s attendance record is accurately updated and
they should especially speak to a live person if they are calling after 9:30 a.m. to request an
early dismissal. Many freshman students are telling their parents to just come in to the front office and
we will call them out of class. This is disruptive to the classroom and it is not the way we do this at Cathedral.
Don’t forget that you and your student can sign up to receive mobile alerts from Cathedral. To sign up,
go to www.gocathedral.mobi and select Irish Parent. Your student should select the group that corresponds with
his/her class year. If you have any questions, please email Lisa Renze-Rhodes at lrenze@cathedral-irish.org
Cathedral will offer two SAT prep classes 2nd semester. The first will begin January 24th and meet on consecutive
Monday nights through March 7th, leading up to the March 12 testing date. The second class will start March 14 th
and meet on consecutive Monday nights through May 2, leading up to the May 7th testing date. (There is also a test
in June) The class will not meet during Spring Break. Both sessions will meet from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in Room 2302/2301. The
cost is $150.00 for 14 hours of instruction, and we will provide all practice materials. Registration will begin January 10 th.
Please email lobrien@cathedral-irish.org if you have any questions.

Service Outreach News:
The spirit of our service will be guided by Matt 25:35-36: “I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave
me drink, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless and you gave to shelter. I was ill and you came to see me.”
Our new year offers inspirational service opportunities for our Cathedral students.
Class Service Projects Kent Keith, noted author on servant leadership, shares that “the most effective leaders seek to
make a difference in the lives of others.” At Cathedral, our service efforts are strongly focused upon building the positive
leadership of our students. As we are now halfway through January, the remaining Cathedral initiated events for this month
include a drive for the refugee center at Catholic Charities from Jan 26-Feb 2, led by Refugee Council Ambassadors Katy
Hoeper and Liz Subrin. Another group will travel to Camp Atterbury on Saturday evening, Jan 29 to support the soldiers
before their deployment to Afghanistan. New Day offers training for their wonderful program supporting families in their
divorce recovery; our students provide inspiring support for this program. Save the date of Feb 26 to help at University of
Indianapolis in our MAKE IT MINE IPS outreach. Details on all of these on-going class service projects are noted below in
Service Opportunities as wonderful opportunities for insight and making a difference for others.
S.A.I.L (Students Active in Initiative and Leadership) Workshop Students are invited to a leadership workshop on
Saturday, Feb 19 from 10:30 AM to 2:30 PM at Cathedral in the SLC. The fee for this workshop is $25. The morning
session will be guided by the leadership experiences of four noteworthy Cathedral alumni, who are actively engaged in not
for profit agencies in the Indianapolis community. The afternoon session will include break-out sessions to focus upon the
work and worth of these agencies in our Indianapolis community. Our students will have an opportunity to direct how the
collective donation of $10 per person (part of the workshop fee of $25) will be used by the agency to further its community
work. We will close the session with a zumba and ukele lesson. If needed, scholarship may be applied for the workshop fee.
See registration form and flyer for details. Four service hours may be earned. Any questions, please contact Cheri
Halstead, email chalstead@cathedral-irish.org or 968 7317.

“Make It Mine” Service Outreach Cathedral students will lead another wonderful day of engagement for IPS middle
school students on Saturday, February 26 at the University of Indianapolis. Cathedral artists, musicians, athletes, scholars
and dancers will lead six activity centers regarding music, art, athletics, reading, writing, and art. The theme of the day is
MAKE IT MINE. More than 150 Cathedral students will be needed to be reading buddies during the next year and to
encourage the reading of EIGHT books. Our next MAKE IT MINE event will take place at University of Indianapolis on
Saturday, February 26. Reserve this date now in your calendar to help out on this special day. We performed a smaller
Make It Mine event on December 4 at IPS 106. Mrs. Foster, the school principal, shares that the rest of her fifth and sixth
grade students cannot wait until our February 26 event at the University of Indianapolis. Click here for the sign up form.
Service Hours on Power School Service hours may be viewed on Power School and are current for all
hours received since the start of school. There is a small button in the upper right hand corner to view the
service hours. For the 2010-11academic year, service hours for seniors were due December 1, 2010 to
meet their total graduation requirement. For the academic year of 2010-11, freshmen, sophomore and junior
hours are due March 1, 2011. The status of service hours for these underclassmen will be shown as
satisfactory or unsatisfactory on the third quarter report card. If the hours for last year were completed,
hours earned after April 23, 2010 may be credited to the current year’s requirement. We are accepting
service on a project basis as well. After Sep 1, hours will not be accepted more than sixty days after the
date of service performance.

have other problems with the linked documents, please proceed to the website to access links from the Service
Opportunities area
under On Campus/Service Outreach.
Please continue to turn to the most compelling areas of need to perform your service stewardship. Thank you for
supporting your class service projects with enthusiasm and compassion. Should you desire to pursue an outreach project
with an agency not listed, you may also consult the list of service agencies available by clicking here. By working with
diligence and interest on your service, you should find yourself achieving about four hours of service each
month. The balance of 2010 and 2011 provides rich opportunities to direct helpful hands and hearts to aid our community
needs.
Service Reflection
They say it takes a minute to serve a special person,
An hour to appreciate them,
A day to love them,
But then an entire life to forget them.
May your Cathedral service personally enrich you and your spirituality, as we seek to
address challenges faced by our brothers and sisters in our immediate community and worldwide.
Service hours for freshmen, sophomore and junior students for the academic year of 20010-11 are due on March 1,
2011. Seniors graduation hours for the academic year of 2010-11 were due on December 1, 2010. Click here for
the 2010-11 Service Documentation. Click here for the 2009-10 Service Documentation form. Click here for the
Service Hour Criteria. Hours will not be accepted more than sixty days after the date of service performance.
Please check the service criteria because neighbor help, family help and working for a business without pay is not
accepted as service hours. We always encourage our students to help their families and neighbors but we do not
accept these efforts as service hours. We seek to perform our service in the spirit of Matthew 25:35-36.

Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (1-17-11) - Property of Billy Shepherd Sports Inc. and presented by the NFHS
What is your mind-set when you are preparing to play against a team or an individual that is considered superior to
you?
 Do you feel like you can win? Do you believe in yourself, your teammates, and your coaches?
 One coach recently told his team to do the ordinary, and maybe something extraordinary could happen. Upsets
occur all the time. Why not expect the unexpected? Just do the ordinary things!

Meditation:
Meditation: Mark 3:1-6
“They watched him closely.” (Mark 3:2)
Where is the love? This kind of question comes to mind when we read of the Pharisees’ stringent interpretation of the
Mosaic Law. They had taken up the role of guardians and interpreters of the Law, and most were sincere in their devotion.
But their error, especially when compared to Jesus, lay in the way some of them emphasized the letter of the Law over the
spirit of the Law. In fact, just to entrap him, some were accusing Jesus of breaking God’s law by healing a man on the
Sabbath. This led to the almost ridiculous question that Jesus was forced to ask them: “Is it lawful to do good on the
Sabbath?” (Mark 3:4).
The Pharisees were claiming that Jesus, who had been moved by the man’s condition to heal him, was guilty of rendering
medical treatment, which was prohibited on the Sabbath. Instead of using their common sense, their attachment to their
interpretation of God’s word led them to an absurd position. Of course it’s right to do good on the Sabbath! Of course it’s
right to heal someone on a day of rest. In fact, wouldn’t the Sabbath be one of the best days for healing someone and
helping him enter into the “rest” of the Lord?
Like the Pharisees, Jesus loved the Law and lived to uphold it. Yet he knew that keeping the Law required love as the key,
not extensive elaboration on the rules. By inviting this man to “come up” (Mark 3:3), or rise up before the crowd, Jesus
foreshadowed his own rising up on Easter—a resurrection that he would share with all of us.
In a sense, each of us is that man in the synagogue, invited to “come up” and enter into Jesus’ rest. In prayer today, picture
Jesus standing before you, inviting you to come up to be with him. Are any burdens weighing you down? Have you maybe
replaced the law of love with strict, burdening legalism? Let it go, and run to Jesus. He has more than enough grace to help
you follow him with a joyful, peaceful heart!
“Holy Spirit, without your guidance I cannot hope to please the Father. Teach me how to think and act according to God’s
law of love and mercy.”
Blessings,
