Youth of the Year Quest 2014/2015
Lions Club of Victor Harbor and Port Elliot
Contest Outline
The Lions Youth of the Year Quest is aimed at encouraging personality
development, confidence, self-expression, citizenship, public speaking and
leadership in youth. The Quest provides all entrants with invaluable experiences that
will help them in their future endeavours.
The Quest is open to all students who will be aged between 15 and 19 as of the 30 th
June 2015.
Why should you participate?
Participating in the Quest is a chance to experience and broaden your abilities and
confidence in yourself through interview and public speaking opportunities. The
experience you gain from the Quest will give you valuable insight and experience
which will help you in future job, university and community group interviews and dayday situations.
The overall winner and public speaking award winner at our club level will each
receive $250.
There’s also the opportunity to go further than just our club level. Remember the
Lions Youth of the Year Quest is a national competition. With State winners
participating in a Lions International Youth camp in New Zealand during December
2015 – January 2016. Also the overall national winner and the winner of the public
speaking division win an overseas trip to a destination of their choosing.
Lions Youth of the Year Quest – ‘you just can’t lose!’
Process and hints for entrants
At club level the quest consists of three stages. First you must fill out an entry form,
next you will be interviewed by a panel of judges, and finally at a Lions Club dinner
meeting you will give a prepared speech and answer two impromptu questions. The
winner from our club will go on to compete in the next level against the club winners
from surrounding Lions clubs. There are 4 stages in the quest, Club, District,
Regional and State; with the state winners going to compete on the national stage.
1. Entry Form
 Applications are available for all students who wish to apply.
 Students MUST return completed forms to their contact teacher by 1
September 2014.
 Under no circumstances will applications be accepted after 1
September 2014.
 The filling out of this form must be taken seriously as this form is the
basis for your interview.



Students are advised to treat this form like a job application.
Students are also asked to include the topic for their five minute
prepared speech they will give at the dinner meeting.
This form will be passed onto all following levels of judging should the
applicant win the club final.
2. Interview
 The interview lasts about 30-40 minutes and will be held during school
hours on the 9th of September 2014 at a venue to be advised. (Most
likely the Victor Harbor Council Library)
 Successful students will have a good knowledge and appreciation of
Australia, current affairs and general knowledge.
 Students will be able to express themselves clearly, concisely and
adequately during the interview process.
 Students may be required to respond to questions and/or deliver a
short formal address.
 The entrant’s personality, personal achievements, and community
service/ involvement will also be considered.
3. Public Speaking
 This component of the quest will be held on the night of the 12th of
September 2014 at the Christian Gospel Centre, George Main Road,
Victor Harbor. Students are asked to be at the venue at 6:15pm for a
6:30pm start.
 Supper will be provided.
 You can expect members and their partners as well as the other
students, parents, judges and teachers to be present.
 Do not be daunted by the number of people you will be speaking in
front of. Every person present is there to support you.
 The public speaking component will consist of:
o 2x2 minute impromptu questions to each entrant. (When you
are not speaking you will not be able to hear or see what is
happening. This allows a fair challenge to all students whilst
using the same questions for all.)
o The impromptu questions are usually on topical subjects. (keep
your eyes on the newspaper) For example previous years have
asked questions on global warming, finance, water
conservation, health and education.
o Remember – there is no correct answer; the judges are just
looking for your opinion.
o If you run out of thoughts end by saying something like – ‘that’s
all I have to say, thank you.’
o If you reach the two minute bell, finish your sentence and wrap
up.
o You will also deliver a 5 minute prepared speech on a topic of
your choosing. It is advised that this topic be of interest to you
and NOT of political or religious nature.
o The entrant will receive a four minute warning bell. Points are
lost for being too short or too long.
4. Other
 You are welcome to ask as many guests as you want to attend this
night. The more people in attendance, the better experience this event
will be for all students involved.
 Please advise the lions club via the contacts below of the number of
guests attending by the 9th of September 2014 so that we can
organise catering.
 Students are required to wear their formal school uniform to both the
interview and public speaking night.
5. Heats
 If there are more than 5 applications received across all participating
schools, all students will be required to participate in a heat on
Tuesday 2nd September 2014.
 A heat round will consist of a short interview with the judges, and the
students having to give a response to an impromptu question in-front of
the judges and a small group of people.
