Exposure
Enrichment
•
Education
Exposure is a single appearance by
a performer or teacher to add to
a school curriculum or entertain
a population. Exposure is by
design a limited form of
outreach, but better than
nothing.

“Well, what we are doing is giving music
lessons (different instruments) to kids and
young people specially girls who have suffered
sexual abuse. So music functions as a therapy
for them. In this month, several ensembles
from the orchestra are having performances at
different restaurants, so the money that
restaurants raise from certain dishes goes to
pay the music lessons for these kids.”
Ideal Audience:
This program relates music to elements of everyday life, and therefore
is well-suited to students with no exposure to classical music, as
well as substantial previous exposure. The content is easily
adjusted to be appropriate for students of all ages, grades K-12.
Description:
This program is designed to teach students about playing chamber
music by using the string quartet as a metaphor for the family. It
examines the musical and personal relationships present in the
string quartet, and shows how these relationships grow and
change, just like the relationships between friends, families,
spouses, and colleagues.
-how chamber musicians communicate to each
other without using words
-the different musical roles in a quartet and how
they change
-conflict resolution
-a variety of chamber music repertoire, and why
this music is so timeless
Performances of excerpts from works by Theodore Dubois, Antonin
Dvorak, Dmitri Shostakovich,
and Ludwig van Beethoven.
Ideal Audience:
This program is well suited to audiences grade 5-12, who
have not had exposure to music in the past. However,
it also contains historical information of interest to
children with musical training.
Description:
The theme of this program concerns composers who have had to
battle opposition to their music, and to themselves personally, at
some point in their careers. This may be opposition from critics,
colleagues, the government, or even family members. How they
overcame this opposition is meant to inspire students to follow
their hearts and pursue their dreams.
-what was happening in history while these
composers were living
-how their struggles influenced their music
-the lives and personal philosophies of the
composers presented
-pieces of music that they may not have heard
before.
Performances of excerpts from works by Hugo Wolf,
Theodore Dubois, Robert Schumann, Kelly-Marie
Murphy, and Dmitri Shostakovich
