It was a member of USC-International. The embryo of SATUNAMA was the Indonesian country representative of USC-Canada. At that time, the focus of the organization was on the eradication/ decrease of poverty in Indonesia. Along with the nation’s massive crisis in 1997, the organisation realized that poverty was not an isolated entity, but it was caused by systems of politics, economy, culture, beliefs. Assignment Overview SATUNAMA is developing its own organizational culture, which is expected to become the binding spirit of the organization. To initiate the idea, SATUNAMA needs an expert, who can read the real situation, identify and draw some important existing elements from it, which will become the essential seeds for developing the communal spirit and organisational culture. Since this is a new concept for Indonesian NGOs, there are no locally available experts. SATUNAMA has previously hosted volunteers and is also a partner with AVI on a Melbourne University student program. Assignment Objectives Identification of the strengths, opportunities, inspiration in the organisation (SATUNAMA) to create the formation of positive organizational culture. Duties and Responsibilities of the Volunteer In consultation with their line manager and relevant stakeholders, volunteers complete a work plan in the first three months of their assignment. The duties below are an indication of the type of work that may be involved in meeting the Assignment Objectives: To Identify and List the elements to build organizational culture Identification of some positive elements to determine good practices in the organization To create Initial efforts that will build the foundation for the organizational culture To crosscheck the identified elements with the real practices of the organization. Hours & Days of Employment From 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, Monday to Friday The expectation is that the volunteer will work the equivalent of a 5-day week to a maximum of 40 hours per week. The two story office consist of fives office buildings seperated in the different area (around 300 metres from one another). One big office with complete facilities operated as SATUNAMA’s main building. All office buildings have wifi internet access. Yogyakarta is considered the cultural and learning centre of Indonesia. Yogya itself is a mid-sized city surrounded by agricultural areas. The city is a popular destination for both local and foreign tourists and therefore has a wide range of options in terms of food, entertainment, sports activities etc. Yogya also has a large student population which gives the city a young and vibrant feel. There is also a supermarket and lots of mini marts for the purchase of daily necessities. The city of Yogyakarta is accessible by plane from Denpasar, Surabaya or Jakarta. The cities of Solo and Semarang (capital city of Central Java) are easily accessible by bus, with Solo having a direct rail link to the city of Yogyakarta. Yogyakarta is a fast modernizing city very accepting of other cultures and ways of life. Aside from language differences and to be expected differing social expectations, there are no significant factors that would affect the volunteer. Even though Yogyakarta is a popular tourist destination and has a large student population, some parts of Yogya city remain quite conservative so it is important to be aware of cultural norms. The need for personal transport is dependent upon where a volunteer chooses to live in relation to the workplace and public transport, walking or even the use of a bicycle are also options. There are also lots of taxis available in Yogyakarta but using these on a daily basis could prove expensive. Many volunteers based in Yogyakarta chose to purchase a motorcycle. This is a personal choice rather than an absolute necessity. A motorcycle could be purchased for between IDR 8-10 million or AUD 8001000 and sold at the end of the assignment for a similar amount. Fuel costs approximately IDR 8,500 / litre or AUD 0.85 / litre. Indonesia has extremely good and affordable telecommunications systems, especially in the major cities (for around AUD 50 per month volunteers can have internet installed in their accommodation). There are a range of pre-paid telephone networks that support the use of smart phones, and many restaurants, coffee shops, and shopping malls also provide free wi-fi. Allowances & Support These allowance levels are based on the Cost of Living in country. They will be reviewed periodically and may increase or decrease. Volunteers will be given notice of any change to the allowance level.
