Wednesday, August 27, 2008 Edition #4 Dear Cathedral Parents, Cathedral High School Vision I wish to remind you of the Meet the Teacher Program which will be held tomorrow - Thursday, August 28th at both 1:00 and 7:00 p.m. I do ask those who can to come to the earlier program to help alleviate the parking situation in the evening. More information is in this document about these special programs. Cathedral High School, a Catholic institution, will be the model for all high schools as she profoundly shapes the way students think, serve and lead. Cathedral High School Mission Cathedral, a Catholic college preparatory high school, provides to a diverse group of students opportunities for spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional and physical growth through service and academic excellence. We began Monday with a short assembly welcoming back Samantha Peszek from the 2008 Olympics in Beijing! As the students entered, the Pride of the Irish Band played a medley of patriotic songs, including the National Anthem. As Samantha entered, the students all waved small American flags and were on the floor with an entrance area for her down the middle of the Robert V. Welch Student Activity Center. After welcoming Samantha home, students were seated and we presented her with an engraved silver bracelet (representing her silver medal) and a crystal shamrock (a gift reserved for esteemed friends of Cathedral) and a silver engraved base on which to place the shamrock. Samantha graciously thanked everyone for their support and prayers during her various competitions leading to the Olympics and for their best wishes she received. We are so proud of Samantha, Cathedral’s third Olympian after Frank McKinney (1956 & 1960 Games) and Chris Huffins (2000 Games). Today we received the news that Sam will be on the Oprah show. The filming of the show is set for Wednesday, September 3rd. Tomorrow she will be part of the half-time for the Indianapolis Fever Basketball game. Samantha has chosen to skip the 40-city tour being done by her teammates. She wants to return to school and get caught up. Welcome home, Sam! Paul Commons (’05) and his sister, Carolyn, are in South Africa right now. They are in the final stages of deploying over 100 laptop computers to a small community who would not normally have such learning tools. Paul started this particular effort many months ago and it includes a number of fellow students from Indiana University. They raised money, applied for and received grant money, organized a massive excursion for 20 people to South Africa, identified and coordinated with three schools to be the target of this project, acquired the laptops, 4 large computer servers, printers, network equipment school supplies all to take with them. Once there, they have arranged for electricity to be installed at the schools, internet access to be installed at the schools and all this while working with the national and local government bodies. The entire group spent days learning the laptops and putting together initial lesson plans. They were all so excited to leave for their journey. They have encountered a few unforeseen problems along the way but in spite of this they appear to be making unbelievable progress. The group is all healthy and working hard. With the exception of Carolyn, they are expected to return at the end of this month. I look forward to their return. Carolyn continues on with her travels and is going to northwest India to work for a few months helping as a student teacher. Please take the time to read some of the stories about their trip to Africa on their BLOG site. It is a wonderful read. http://iuohot.blogspot.com/ ***** Meet the Teacher Programs Announcement: 2008 – 2009: On Thursday, August 28th we will have two identical “Meet the Teacher Programs” to allow parents to experience their child’s schedules, walk the daily path which your student travels (without carrying all those books, of course) and to meet each teacher for a nine-minute class designed to give a bird’s eye view of the course which will be presented this year. In the past, we have had a traffic jam on the hill from 6:40 – 7:20 p.m. For this reason, we have scheduled the two identical programs, which will run from 1:00 – 3:02 p.m. and from 7:00 – 9:02 p.m. Teachers will be giving an overview 3 of their course including methods of instruction, technology to be used, and how parent and teacher contacts may be made. I wish to be sure that you understand that this is neither time nor place for individual student conferences. If you wish such a conference, you should make an appointment with your child’s teacher(s). If you have more than one child, this set of programs will allow you to attend the classes of both your children. In order to arrive on time for your child’s first period class, please plan on arriving no later than 20 minutes before the scheduled start time. If at all possible, we encourage you to attend the afternoon session. It would be highly advisable to discuss the classroom locations (and shortcuts) ahead of time with your son or daughter. Upon arrival, you may pick up your student’s schedule at the front entrance of Father Kelly Hall or at the entrance of the Student Life Center (by the Media Center). We look forward to seeing you on Thursday, August 28th! Please come to one of these college fairs! Please take special notice of the National Fair that will take place on November 6th. This is the first time since the mid-90’s that this fair is being held in Indianapolis and there will be an opportunity to see a number of colleges from all over the country. Also, the Colleges that Change Lives Tour will highlight the colleges that appear in Loren Pope’s book of the same name. Mrs. Pivonka has made me aware of the Colleges that Change Lives College Fair to be held on Thursday, September 11th at The Fountains Banquet and Conference Center, 502 East Carmel Drive, Carmel, IN. The program begins at 7:00 p.m. Each Colleges That Change Lives program begins with an enlightening 30-minute panel presentation on completing a college search today. We promise to not bore you with a session about how to apply for college, what to expect during a campus visit, and so forth. Rather, CTCL deans and directors will share with you the latest research on specific campus characteristics and learning components that lead to the most successful college experience. They will challenge you to view popular college rankings as just one measure of quality among many, and encourage you to make the college search process a wellinformed journey that leads to the best possible outcome: finding the best college fit—one that could be life changing. Immediately after the panel presentation, the college fair begins, lasting approximately 1.5 hours. Students and families will be able to collect information from and speak directly with admission representatives from the colleges and universities that inspired noted education reporter and former New York Times education editor Loren Pope to write the book Colleges That Change Lives. The CTCL events are free to the public, and pre-registration is not required. We hope you will join us for this valuable discussion and program. To see a list of college which will be present, please check this site: http://www.ctcl.org/events/programs All Cathedral students are welcome to any of these College Fairs! On the season’s first weekend, the Irish did something even better. They played well enough to stay there. The Irish, which last season won their first state title and this season returned what Irish Coach Marc Behringer said may be their most-talented roster in recent memory, played in the St. Joseph Invitational on Saturday, August 23, and went unbeaten there. The Irish tied 10th-ranked Lake Central 1-1, and then beat No. 5 Evansville Reitz (3-1) and No. 4 Penn (3-1) to remain atop the state poll in the second week. Cathedral has 199 points in the poll compared to 189 for second-place Fort Wayne Dwenger. The Irish this weekend will play in the four-team Carmel Invitational, a tournament that also includes No. 3 Carmel, No. 2 Dwenger and No. 19 Fort Wayne Canterbury. A look at the Irish’s 2008 varsity fall sports as of August 26. Girl’s soccer (2-0-1), the defending state champion and ranked No. 1 in the Indiana Soccer Coaches Association girls’ state poll, went unbeaten against a trio of state-ranked teams in the St. Joseph Invitational on Saturday, August 23. The Irish tied 10th-ranked Lake Central 1-1, and then scored a pair of 3-1 victories, first beating No. 5 Evansville Reitz then beating No. 4 Penn by the same score to remain atop the state poll in the second week. The Irish will play in the Carmel Invitational Saturday, August 30. Football (0-1), which entered the season No. 1 in the Indiana Football Coaches Association Class 4A poll, lost at Carmel, 28-21, in the season-opener – a game televised nationally on ESPN. The loss, which came after the 17 Irish led the Greyhounds – the No. 1 team in the state in Class 5A – by seven points in the second half, dropped the Irish to No. 2 in the second Class 4A poll, which was released on August 25. The Irish received 84 votes, seven behind top-ranked Columbus East, which received four first-place votes to the Irish’s five. The Irish will play Canton (Ohio) McKinley in the Herbstreit Classic on Saturday, August 30, at 2 p.m. This weekend, your Fighting Irish Football Team travels to Canton Ohio to play Canton McKinley H.S. in the Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge. The event will be played in the Football Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton at 2:00pm on Saturday the 30th. Canton is on the same time as we are here. Presale tickets are on sale now in the Athletic Office. Pre-sale adult tickets are $14.00 each with a $2 rebate for Cathedral Athletics. The cost at the stadium will be $16.00 Student tickets may be purchased this week for $10.00 each. Support your Fighting Irish on the road this Saturday!
