UFC 148 – MEDIA NOTES
NEWS AND NOTES
AFTER TWO YEARS OF TAUNTS, SOME VENOM FROM THE SPIDER
Reigning UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva is usually one of the most respectful and sportsmanlike mixed martial
artists on the UFC roster. However, on the June 25 media conference call ‘the Spider’ - irate at two years of taunting from
Sonnen - took the opportunity to sound a warning to the man who came within two minutes of taking his title in August 2010.
“I’m going to break his face and every tooth in his mouth,” Silva said through his interpreter and manager Ed Soares. “I
know he’s on the call listening to this and playtime is over. There’s no more talking from him. I’m going to beat him out of
the UFC. I’m going to make him pay for everything he’s said about me, my family and my country. I’m going to beat him
maybe like his parents should have to teach him some manners. I’ll teach him those manners myself.
“No more sh** talking from him. Chael Sonnen's going to get his ass kicked like he's never gotten his ass kicked before.
What I'm going to do inside the Octagon is something that's going to change the image of the sport, I’m sorry. I'm going to
beat his ass like he's never been beaten before. This is going to be violent and I am sorry. I'm going to make sure that every
one of his teeth are broken, that his arms are broken and his legs are broken. He's not going to be able to walk out of the
Octagon by himself. I can guarantee that. He will need a plastic surgeon afterwards.”
Seldom lost for words, Sonnen said: “People can’t understand why I’m not getting caught up on the hype of Anderson Silva,
but he can’t take the magazine covers and press stories into the Octagon with him. He’s just a man with two arms, two legs and I’m going to beat him on July 7 because I want it more than he does.
“I don’t need anything in my life - but I have to have that belt. Everything I’ve done, everything I’ve worked for and
sacrificed - everything I have in life - I would give it all away to be the UFC champion for just one night.”
UFC President Dana White said: "I've promoted every Anderson Silva fight since he's been in the UFC in 2006, and I've
never heard him talk even remotely like this. He is usually so respectful and doesn't say anything negative or disrespectful.
I've never heard Anderson talk like this once – and I’ve never heard Chael be so sincere about how bad he wants to win this
fight and what it means to him to be the UFC world champion.”
ORTIZ BIDS FARWELL AS HALL OF FAMER
Tito Ortiz - the longest-reigning light heavyweight champion of all time and one of the biggest personalities in the sport of
mixed martial arts - will be the ninth individual to be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame. He will be officially inducted just
8hours before the final fight of his amazing career.
“It is a huge honor to be recognized as one of the greatest fighters of all time by the UFC,” Ortiz said. “To be inducted into
the Hall of Fame is final proof that all the hard work and dedication, all the pain and sacrifices, were all worth it. To be able
to walk to the Octagon one last time as an official UFC Hall of Fame level fighter is going to be humbling and awesome. I’m
very grateful to have this opportunity to end my career on such a high like this.
“I want to thank my family for all their love and support and my fans for sticking with me through the bad times when being
a Tito Ortiz fan wasn’t the coolest thing to be. Finally, I want to thank Lorenzo Fertitta and Dana White for giving me so
many opportunities over the years and for securing the future of the sport I love and have dedicated my life to.”
A brash, polarizing presence with bleached blonde hair and devastating takedowns, Ortiz made his UFC debut on May 30,
1997 at UFC 13. He smashed an entrant named Wes Albritton in 31 seconds and, within three years, had annexed the UFC
light heavyweight title by beating the also soon-to-be legendary Wanderlei Silva. The Huntington Beach Bad Boy would go
on to reign for a record three and a half years and had some of the biggest fights of his or any other era.

UFC 148 – MEDIA NOTES
UFC President Dana White said: “Everyone knows the story of me and Tito and all the things that went on between us. A lot
of it wasn’t fun at the time, but all that controversy and craziness is now part of the story of the UFC, and there’s no question
that in his prime he was a huge star and one of the greats of his era.
“You can’t write the story of this era of mixed martial arts without Tito Ortiz, and that’s why he belongs in the Hall of Fame.
He’s been in the UFC for 15years – and sticking around that long is an achievement in itself – and now he’s down to just
15minutes at UFC 148. Believe me, I know how proud and stubborn this guy is and I expect him to use everything he has left
as a fighter to go out as a winner at UFC 148.”
Ortiz aims to leave UFC 148 – and his career – as a winner.
“My name will probably always be linked with guys like Wanderlei Silva, Chuck Liddell and especially Ken Shamrock,”
Ortiz said. “But the fights with Forrest were as good and competitive as any of them. When I first fought him, he was
inexperienced and made a name for himself in doing so well against me. The next time we fought I was supposed to be over
the hill, and I showed that I wasn’t finished by long shot.
“Now, I just want to prove I was the better fighter all along by winning the rubber match. I don’t want to go out on a sour
note – I want everyone’s last image of me to be me in the center of the Octagon with my hand raised.”

FAQs
WHAT IS MIXED MARTIAL ARTS?
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is the fastest growing sport in the world. Two athletes compete against each other using a mixture of
martial art disciplines including the Olympic disciplines of boxing, Greco-Roman wrestling, freestyle wrestling, judo, taekwondo as
well as traditional martial arts such as kickboxing, karate, jiu-jitsu, and Thai boxing. Contests last for three, five minute rounds (five
rounds for UFC Title fights and certain main events) unless a combatant wins inside the distance by scoring a stoppage or
submission. If the bout lasts the distance, a winner is found via the scorecards of three ringside judges, who use the same ’10-point
must’1 system utilised in professional boxing.
WHAT IS THE ULTIMATE FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP?
The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is the world’s premier mixed martial arts organization. Established in 1993, the UFC is
the equivalent of the NFL or F-1 of mixed martial arts and boasts the world’s élite and most experienced MMA athletes. In January
2001, under the new ownership of Zuffa, LLC, the UFC brand restructured MMA into a highly organized and controlled combat
sport. UFC programming is now enjoyed by millions of fans all over the world.
IS THE UFC “NO-HOLDS BARRED” FIGHTING?
No. The UFC has an extensive set of rules and regulations including a list of 31 fouls. ‘No holds barred’ is a professional wrestling
term and inapplicable to the sport of mixed martial arts.
ARE UFC FIGHTS SAFE?
Yes, both the UFC and the Athletic Commissions the UFC works with around the world make every effort towards athlete safety.
These efforts include but are not limited to medical and drug testing, having weight classes to prevent mismatches, having trained
referees and judges, consistent rules, standardised rounds, approved gloves and many other elements necessary to protect the
health and safety of the UFC’s athletes. After 19 years and well over 2000 bouts in our organization, the most serious injury
suffered by an athlete remains a broken arm.
WHY DO THE CONTESTS TAKE PLACE INSIDE A CAGE?
The ‘cage’ utilised by the UFC is known as ‘the Octagon’™ and, as you would expect given the name, it is an eight-sided structure.
The Octagon’s specific configuration was designed for two main reasons. 1) Fighter safety, as the robust fence eliminates the
chance of fighters tumbling out of the ring as sometimes happens in kick-boxing and boxing bouts. 2) The eight-sided structure,
unique in combat sports, eliminates the advantage enjoyed by a competitor well versed in the art of ‘cutting off the ring’ as a boxer
or kickboxer may do.
The UFC Octagon is a US registered trademark of Zuffa, LLC. Constructed with Athletic Commission approved canvas, padding
and fencing the Octagon has become symbolic with the highest standards of safety in all of mixed martial arts.
WHAT KIND OF PROTECTIVE GEAR DO COMPETITORS WEAR?
UFC competitors wear regulation 4oz gloves, a gum shield, a protective cup under their Thai boxing or MMA shorts and also wrap
their hands in gauze and a limited amount of medical bandages before putting on their gloves. They compete stripped to the waist
and barefoot. Unlike boxing gloves, MMA gloves are thumbless in order to better facilitate the grappling aspect of mixed martial
arts.
It is worth pointing out that boxing gloves are designed to protect a fighter’s hands, not his opponent’s face and body. Moreover,
because of the differences between the two sports, a MMA fighter will never be punched to the head hundreds of times per bout as
in boxing.
1
The 10-point must system is a method of scoring a combat sport or fighting match. (e.g., boxing or mixed martial arts). Under the
system, the judges must give the winner of a round 10 points, and the loser 9 points or fewer.
15
UFC 148 – MEDIA NOTES
WHAT ARE THE WEIGHT DIVISIONS IN MMA?
The UFC currently has eight weight divisions that help ensure there are no mismatches:
Heavyweight (upper limit 265lbs)
Light Heavyweight (205lbs)
Middleweight (upper limit 185lbs)
Welterweight (upper limit 170lbs)
Lightweight (upper limit 155lbs)
Featherweight (upper limit 145lbs)
Bantamweight (upper limit 135lbs)
Flyweight (upper limit 125lbs)
WHAT KIND OF PRE-BOUT MEDICAL TESTS ARE UFC ATHLETES REQUIRED TO TAKE?
The UFC works closely with the leading Athletic Commissions around the world and competitors are comprehensively examined by
fully licensed doctors. In addition, they must undergo a dilated ophthalmologic eye examination, a MRI scan, a cerebral magnetic
resonance angiography, a HIV test and a hepatitis test before they are allowed to compete in the UFC. The UFC and the Athletic
Commissions the UFC works with, also test for performance-enhancers and other banned substances.
IS MMA SAFER THAN BOXING?
Statistically, mixed martial arts is at a minimum no more dangerous than boxing, and there is evidence leading many to believe it is
safer than boxing. Moreover, it is also safer than many other popular and sports such as football, motor racing, rugby, horse racing,
soccer, track and field and even cheerleading.
WHAT KIND OF BACKGROUNDS DO UFC COMPETITORS COME FROM?
The UFC’s fighter roster currently boasts athletes from all walks of life, including students, former police officers, IT professionals,
ex-firemen, mental health specialists, a math tutor, mechanics, a chef and, until very recently, even a former anti-terrorist officer and
former Member of the Croatian Parliament.
