Call for Presentation Proposals
The UVU College of Humanities and Social Sciences is pleased to present the 2015 UVU Family
Conference. This single-day event is scheduled for Friday, November 6th from 9am until 4pm in the
Sorensen Student Center on UVU campus.
The conference will feature a keynote presentation from John and Jane Covey. John is director of the Home
and Family Division at Franklin Covey Company and he and Jane have spread their passion for strengthening
families for more than 20 years as they consult with fortune 500 companies world-wide. The program will also
include an afternoon plenary session and concurrent presentations in the morning and afternoon intended
to help participants investigate various aspects of Family Life, and meeting the interests/needs of
students, professionals, service providers and community members.
Symposium Objectives:
We desire to be a forum for a broad and varied range of topics and/or research to be presented. We are
seeking presentations relating to the following aspects of family life:

Strengthening and Growing Relationships – for those seeking to enhance and enrich their
current relationships and develop new lasting connections. This would include topics such as:
o Effective couple communication
o Facing an empty nest
o Finding and keeping a healthy relationship
o Surviving hard times together
o Finding Life Balance
o Setting healthy expectations
o Forgiveness
o And other related topics….

Parenting – designed for those seeking information and insight on preparing for, and enjoying
successful parenthood. This would include topics such as:
o Infertility
 Adoption options (including preparing an adoption plan, choosing an agency, etc)
 Gestational carrier (surrogacy) options
 IVF
 Physical and emotional impact
o How to identify the warning signs of addiction, depression, etc in our children
o Avoiding shame-based discipline
o Building healthy self-image in our children
o Dealing with bullying
o And other related topics….
Presentations are expected to fall into the following two areas:

Professional Focus – advanced information requiring pre-requisite understanding
o Cutting-edge research on current and emerging therapies and trends (of particular
interest – new research)
o Pedagogies and best practices for enhancing family quality of life

Community Focus – basic information valuable to anyone regardless of current understanding
o Strategies for meeting the unique opportunities and challenges of family life
o Family dynamics
General concurrent session presentations will be 75 minutes in length. These sessions are designed to be
fast-paced and generally informational in nature. We encourage group interaction and experiential
learning activities.
Classrooms will contain the following equipment/supplies.

White boards and dry-erase markers
LCD Projector and screen
PC Laptop
The following materials can be provided upon request:

Chart pads and easels
Paper and pens
Printouts of presentation materials (soft-copy master files must be provided prior to August 31st)
Presenters are expected to provide:

Jump-drive (for presentation back-up)
Original presentation materials in electronic format (preferably PDF or MS Office Suite)
For those desiring to use MAC – please bring your computer and adapter cables
Lunch will be provided for all presenters and participants, and will be served from 12pm until 1:30pm.
This will provide the opportunity for networking with colleagues engaged in family education, research,
and practice.
To submit a presentation proposal, please provide:

Brief Bio (3-4 lines)
Presenter photo (for use in conference program)
Brief description of your session content (500 words or less), including
proposed Track and content level (Professional or Community)
Applicable reference information
A proposal submission form is provided below to make the application process easier. Email your proposal
to: harristo@uvu.edu, or fax to: 2015 Family Festival Conference Presentation Proposal, 801-863-7383.
Proposals must be received by Friday, August 28, 2015 in order to be considered.
Classroom space is limited. We encourage you to submit your proposal as early as possible. Once all
timeslots have been filled submissions will no longer be considered (regardless of date submitted).
Accepted proposals will receive confirmation no later than Friday, September 14th, 2015.

Suggestions for Target Audience Presentations:
Professionals: Presentations for professionals will be more advanced knowledge sessions. Assumes fundamental
understanding of treatment/therapy best practices. Presentations need to be focused toward advanced understanding and
topics such as recent research, best practice literature and techniques, treatment theory and empirically supported
treatment techniques. Key words: theory, usable tools, techniques, methods, demonstration, hands-on, results oriented.
Couples/Individuals: Presentations for couples/individuals may be diverse (newly married, individuals dating, emptynesters, couples in distress, individuals seeking improved relationships, etc.) Knowledge of family life principles and best
practice treatments/therapies may be minimal or expert. Presentations will be focused on practical, hands-on application.
Key words: effective communication, usable tools, methods, demonstration, integration, healthy interaction, building trust.
Parents: Presentations for parents will be focused on providing foundational understanding and best practice principles.
The focus should be on immediately applicable information and resources for families. Topics may include building loving
productive relationships, building work ethic and self-responsibility, interfacing with the education system, available
services, understanding parent rights, understanding the juvenile mind, building healthy self-esteem, effective positive
discipline, intentional messaging, etc. Key words: home, parenting, family, usable tools.
