Ancient Greece Timeline Directions
1. Use 1 or 2 sheets of notebook paper. Title across both pages at the top ANCIENT GREECE
TIMELINE. Draw a timeline across the center of both pages. Label it like this:

2. Divide your timeline up into 7 equal sections by drawing 6 vertical dashes on the line and
label them as below:

3. Color-code the following time periods by creating a key at the bottom of your timeline,
choosing a different color for each period, and coloring over the part of the timeline that
represents that period:
● Early Period: Minoans 1700-1400 BCE
● Early Period: Myceneans 1650-1200 BCE
● Greek Dark Ages: 1200 -750 BCE
● Greek Archaic Period: 800-500 BCE
● Greek Golden Ages: 500-300 BCE
● Alexander the Great’s Reign: 336-323 BCE
4. Mark the following major events of ancient Egyptian history on your timeline. Each
segment on your timeline is five hundred years, so place the events as close to the exact
year as you can:
● 1450 BCE - Myceneans take over Crete
● 1400 BCE – Palace at Knossos destroyed
● 1200 BCE – Trojan War begins
●
850 BCE – Homer composes The Iliad and The Odyssey
●
776 BCE - First Olympic Games held
●
750 BCE - City-states develop
●
510 BCE – Introduction of democracy
●
497 BCE – Persian War begins
●
490 BCE – Battle of Marathon
●
431 BCE – Peloponnesian War begins
●
399 BCE – Socrates condemned to death
●
380 BCE – Plato starts Academy at Athens
●
323 BCE – Alexander the Great dies

2. What is the purpose of a timeline? How can a timeline be a useful tool for studying

3. Look at the timeline you created. What are two observations you can make about
Grecian civilization based on the timeline?
