I am asking that you complete the simple
questions and send it back with a copy sent to
District Treasurer Judith before the end of
March 2016.
Clubs are being asked to complete this in order
to see if there are any clubs with complicated
issues which will need to be tackled before July
2017 when it is 105SW time.
I am also asking that all clubs ,who have not
done so yet, send in their club accounts to
District Treasurer Judith as soon as
possible as this is necessary within the 2012
rules from the
Charity Commissioners.

Newsletter March 2016 from the DG
Shortly some of you will attending our South
West Convention being held at Croyde Bay,
where I will look forward to meeting up with all
the Lions and their partners attending.
Convention is your AGM being held on the 12th
March and the one opportunity for your club to
be represented with your voting delegates and
any other members wanting to find out more
about lionism. There will be exhibition stands;
an opportunity to listen to Past International
Director Gudrun Bjort Yngvadottir from Iceland;
the opening speaker who started Special
Olympics in the UK; a presentation from the
Chief Executive Officer from a Cornish Housing
Group. And indeed the Convention committee,
who are working very hard to make this event
different and more enjoyable than the previous
one – see you there. ALOHA……
Membership in 105SW is now teetering on the
brink of 1200 members. We must put a stop to
this decline in our membership somehow. The
DG team will be putting on another
Membership seminar in Exeter shortly and I
hope that those members who were unable to
attend will come and be able to take back to
their clubs positive ways of recruiting and
retaining members. If we could get our
membership back to over 1250 we would be in
a stronger position – this equates to every club
having a net increase of one member. This is
achievable !!!!
A letter and questionnaire has been sent to
every club treasurer, please complete and send
back before 31st March, this will help us to see if
we have any clubs requiring help prior to
completing the new charity forms. Please send
these completed forms before the deadline.
So far Lions donations to Blind Veterans UK has
reached £56,000 and a further £4000 will be
presented at the Lions UN day at the Palace of
Westminster, to which I along with 8 others
from our District will be attending. PDG Ewan
Jones, the LCIF Liaison Contact, would like to
thank all clubs for their most generous
donations.
I would like to remind you of my charity for the
year again, which is the Adult Hospices in the
South West. I do hope that clubs will help me to
make a difference for all those patients
attending the hospices in the south west by
donating generously. I thank all the clubs who
have donated so far.
Melvin Jones was born in 1879 in Arizona, but
eventually made his home in Chicago and
became associated with an Insurance firm and
in 1913 formed his own agency. He joined a
businessmen’s luncheon group and became the
secretary. This group solely devoted their time
to promoting the financial interests of their
membership. Because of their limited appeal,
they were destined to disappear. So at his
invitation delegate from men’s clubs met in
Chicago to lay the groundworks for an
organisation who put their talents to work
improving their communities and on 7th June
1917 Lions Clubs International was born.

Holsworthy Lions’ Senior Citizens’ lunch
went down well!
Holsworthy & District Lions hosted their Senior
Citizens’ lunch in
Holsworthy Memorial Hall on Saturday 23rd
January. A total of 116 guests enjoyed a three
course dinner and drink from the bar at what is,
traditionally, the Lions first major event of the
year.
Entertainment on the piano was provided by
Margaret Parfett while the guests enjoyed a
meal comprising of vegetable soup, roast beef
with all the trimmings, and apple pie with
Devonshire cream.
Club President Brian Withall said that, as
always, the day had been
fantastic. It is lovely to see so many old friends
getting together and
enjoying a good meal and a chat. He went on to
thank Jon Hutchings of the White Hart Hotel in
Holsworthy for all his hard work in the kitchen
on the day, various Lions’ wives for their help
serving the guests, and the many and various
shops in Holsworthy for donating prizes for the
raffle that followed the meal.
Clevedon Dream Scheme
Clevedon Lions Club new initiative the DREAM
SCHEME has been a resounding success
attracting 15 applications for funding from local
clubs and organisations. The idea being that
Lions funds can make a difference by topping up
existing funding raising efforts by other
organisations to get a dream project off the
ground.
The Club decided to promote the availability of
their charitable funds in the local press and via
social media, as they felt that some local
voluntary organisations may not be aware of
the Lions ability to help good local causes - this
has proved to be the case as 'unknown' groups,
have come out of the woodwork!
At least £3,000 has been earmarked from the
Lions annual Santa Float collections and other
Christmas activities and the Club's Welfare
Panel are now assessing the applications.
The profile of the Club has been raised with all
the launch publicity and by helping clubs
supporting youth activities, the old and those
with disabilities, not only are the beneficiaries
more aware of Lions but the local population
,who donated their money in the first place, can
see what good it can do.
The big bonus is that publicity surrounding the
scheme will continue with numerous press
articles as the grant cheques are
presented. A real win win for all concerned.
more involved in service; one of projects he had
in mind was Young Leaders in Service. Boy! did
we get involved.
We looked around for a youth group to support
and somehow came across the Exeter Police
Cadets. The scheme was outlined to the leader,
Percy Giles a community support officer in
Exeter, who gave us the go ahead to run the
scheme with the Cadets. Log books were duly
distributed and after a relatively short time
there were four Cadets who had gained gold
and one with silver awards. Books were sent to
MD via Lion Jodie, verified and the certificates
and log books posted back.
A very special presentation event was held on
Monday 25 January when certificates were
presented to the five Cadets by PDG Lion Julian
and pins and patches were presented by Lion
President Stephan. The club’s liaison, Cadet
Leader Zelah Strick, arranged for the Exeter
Division Commander, Superintendant Sam
deReya, to give a short address and a vote of
thanks was given by DG Lesley.
Members of the Cadet’s families were invited
and it was obvious that all were very proud of
their achievements.
Leo Co-ordinator Lion Keith Cook, Youth
Exchange Officer Sylvia Cook, YLiS Officer Lion
Jodie Ward and Young Ambassador supremo
VDG Fred Broome were also invited and all
mounted displays of their relevant portfolios
and fielded questions from all comers.
The evening ended with a sumptuous buffet
provided at a generous discount by the
Buckerell Lodge Hotel, where Exeter Club
meets. The Lions Club of Exeter thanks all
involved who gave up their evening to make our
first, but not last (the next group have nearly
filled their log books already), foray into the
mysteries of Young Leaders in Service the
success that it was.
Certificates presented: Silver, Cadet Chloe-Paige
Wright; Gold, Cadets Rhyanon Gower, Harry
Strick, Connor Fewings and Aaron Willdig.
SUCCESSFUL MEMBERSHIP WORKSHOP
A FIRST FOR EXETER LIONS CLUB
Last year our then President, PDG Lion Julian
Chadwick, told the club he wanted to become
Amazing! A full workshop at the Ley Arms,
Kenn, Exeter on Sunday 24th January. All areas
of recruitment and retention were covered
briefly to help Clubs look at different ways to
approach things. Thank you for making this a
success. 46 delegates who will now be rushing
off to make big plans and see our District
numbers increase and our retention buck the
trend.
Those who attended fed back this was
worthwhile and gave some good ideas for
looking at the way we look after our
members, thinking differently about how we
run our clubs to make it attractive to new
people, there were publications given to each
club to look at and review their current
membership plans, or in some cases put a
committee together for
Membership and work on a plan. How this will
be achieved is individual to each Club and
Community.
Orientation and Mentoring for all is so
important, knowledge of your Club,
Organisation and the areas we all support as
Clubs makes a member confident to talk to
others. It is amazing how a chat at the pub or a
conversation at a bucket shake can
convert someone to come along to see what
you do, before you even start on a recruitment
drive. Don’t bombard them, just a snippet of
the best bits will draw them in and a wellmanaged, fun filled meeting or social event will
convert them and yes another lucky person
joins the Club, ready receive the Orientation
and Mentoring for the cycle to continue.
The success of this workshop means we are
planning to run another if the demand is there.
If you are interested in attending please email
Helen Bailey GLT Co-ordinator
helenbailey1610@gmail.com.
Support from both the Leadership Team and
Membership Team will be given Just Ask for any
recruitment plan or just how to get started.
Youth in the SW Share the Message
of Peace
District 105SW had more than 700 students
taking part in this the 2015-16 International
Peace Poster Contest “SHARE PEACE”. Many
thanks to all Clubs who sponsored a group or
school; we continue to be amazed and
delighted with their artistic talent and
thoughtful interpretation of the theme.
Many congratulation to Minehead and District
Lions Club for this year’s winning entry
produced by Lilac Cottington.
Congratulations also to the Runners-up, who
were Raphael Maxwell for Glastonbury & Street
Lions Club and Maizie-Mae Patrick for Exeter
West Lions Club. Presentations will be made to
our 105SW winners at the District Convention in
March 2016.
The MD Peace Poster Contest 2015 winning
poster was sponsored by Balsall Common Lions
Club in 105M, and the International Grand Prize
Winner will be announced on March 12th at
Lions Day with the United Nations.
"A Celebration of Peace" is the theme for the
next Peace Poster Contest. Kits for 2016-17
have been ordered and will (hopefully) be
available for sale at District Convention, or from
me by post, following Convention.
Theresa Warrell
District Peace Poster Officer
Launceston and Literacy
Launceston Lion's President Helen Bailey
together with VP Lion Jo Heard, Lions John
Ellison and Andy Dunning, presented a cheque
for £250.00 to St Catherine's C P Primary School
towards the updating of their library facilities.
Reading is important as it develops the mind,
language and communication skills, it enables a
person to get a job as reports are an essential
part of today's world.
It is important to be able to read instructions
and signs.
The ability to read also increases a person's
self-esteem.
