Bring the current handout assignment, along with your course schedule, syllabus, and text to class, as you will need to refer to them. All assignments are due on the date listed on the syllabus. If you are not prepared and please notify me at 799-7740, or at smccspeech@gmail.com the day before your assignments are due; and they will not be counted as late, but will be due the following class date. The instructor reserves the right to add or delete speeches or text assignments based on participation and abilities of the class. This course schedule is tentative as we may modify it to suit the needs and interests of the class. Class expectations Please adhere to the Golden Rule of Speech: “Extend the same courtesy to the speaker ads you would wish for if you were addressing the class.” This means eliminating such negative behaviors as entering the class late and interrupting the speaker (wait until the speech is delivered); packing up to leave while a speech is being given; talking during a speech delivery or when someone is addressing the class; doing homework while a speech is being delivered; and texting or talking on a cell phone during class. Electronic Intrusion: Please turn off all cell phones while you are in class. If there might be an emergency situation, please notify the instructor, and turn the phone to vibrate. Answer the phone after you have left the classroom. Assignments and Late Class Arrival: Speeches will be due on Mondays and Wednesdays. Text assignments for 2/week classes are due on Wednesday, unless submitted electronically only in an open e-mail on Friday. All online assignments are to be submitted within the e-mail message. No attachments will be opened. All hard copy assignments must be written in black or blue ink. Pencil will not accepted. Submit all assignments in the same medium, stapled together if in hard copy. When arriving late to class wait for permission to enter from the instructor. Please do not enter and disrupt a fellow speaker. Absences: If you are absent, it is your responsibility to contact the instructor for any assignments and speech samples given during your absence, and to make up that work within one week or sooner, unless permission has been obtained from the instructor. Some people will understand the concepts of public speaking more readily than others, and demonstrate this in class. Regardless of where you are on that continuum, what you say in this class has meaning and value. I will need your help to keep the class upbeat and positive. WELCOME to ENG-110 Oral Communication. I’m looking forward to working with you all and watching you become good speakers during this semester.
