KEEP THIS PAPER FOR FUTURE REFERENCE The Catholic Disciple Weekly Paper Details On most Tuesdays (see monthly reading schedule) a paper will be due based on the reading assigned for the quiz on the respective Tuesday. For this assignment, there are three different types of papers you can write: a quote paper OR a thesis paper OR an “Alpha paper.” Option 1) Quote Paper The student selects a significant/intriguing/meaningful quote from the assigned reading. The student then explains the selected quote in the paper. (The explanation must explain the quote within the larger context of the selected reading.) The selected quote is to be listed in italics at the top of the paper. Option 2) Thesis Paper The student identifies the main point/argument/thesis found in the assigned reading. The student then carefully explains and provides the author’s argument in the paper. The student is to engage the text intelligently and make strategic distinctions. THIS IS NOT A SUMMARY PAPER. FIND A THEME/ARGUMENT AND EXPLAIN IT. Option 3) Alpha Paper If you find a connection between what we are reading in Mere Christianity and discussing/watching in our Alpha course, you can explain the connection you found. The student must clearly explain how C.S. Lewis offers insights into our conversation around Alpha. In the paper, the student must make specific references to points that C.S. Lewis makes. In the last paragraph, the student may include a “reflection” about our discussion of Alpha or Mere Christianity. Grading (Remember: papers are 40% of overall class grade) Grading will be based on the following: 1) Creativity, intelligence, and overall engagement of the text. 2) Any grammar, spelling, or punctuation mistakes will reduce the student’s grade. 3) Follow all formatting instructions (see below). 4) DO NOT USE 1st PERSON PERSONAL PRONOUNS: Me, My, I, Mine (this is not a reflection paper). 5) Late papers will receive a grade reduction (one letter grade per day).
