This week we learned about two West African empires: Mali and Songhai. The Malinke people started the Mali empire. One of the most important leaders of Mali was called Sundiata.

He made the empire bigger and re-opened the gold-salt trade. After Sundiata died, a leader named Mansa Musa took his place. Perhaps the most important accomplishment of Mansa Musa was the Islamic pilgrimage he went on to Mecca.

This pilgrimage helped open Mali to the outside world.
