TENNESSEE DIVISION EDUCATION
SEMINAR
AND PRESIDENT’S FORUM
February 20, 2010
The 2010 Tennessee Division Education
Seminar and President’s Forum was
held February 19 and 20, 2010, at the
Hyatt Place in Hendersonville, TN. The
theme of the event was “Polishing
Careers ‘Till They Sparkle”. The ten
chapter members in attendance were:
Debbie Green CPS/CAP; Jan Harrison
CPS; Carol Whited CPS/CAP; Linda Hood
CPS; Elaine McDowell; Sandi Reilly
CPS/CAP; Charlene Henderson CPS;
Marsha Gupton CPS; Jean Brandon
CPS/CAP; and Shelby Ellis CPS/CAP.
The President’s Forum was held Friday
night, February 19, and was for training
of chapter presidents and officers. It
included sessions on Succession
Planning, Strategic Planning, voting and
proxies for EFAM, what to expect as a
delegate or alternate at EFAM, and a
roundtable for successes and
roadblocks by the chapters this year.
Our own Jean Brandon CPS/CAP gave an
outstanding presentation on “Resolving
Conflict”, which was highlighted by
separating into groups and giving
solutions on how to resolve samples of
conflicts.
Saturday, February 20, consisted of two
sessions which five (5) recertification
points were awarded. The morning
session was conducted by Mr. Jesse
Wimberly from New Horizons in
Knoxville, TN. He is a technology
speaker, consultant and trainer. He
spoke to us on SharePoint Workflow
and its use by corporations and
government to automate office
functions. This software program is
business-driven technology with the
network as the desktop. It is a different
way of using programs, the Internet
using programs, the Internet, Google, EMail, etc. Big changes are coming down
the road!
The lunch was fantastic with barbeque,
potato salad, slaw, and wonderful
desserts. We spent the lunch period
sitting with other IAAP members and
networking. Debbie, Jan and I slipped
outside and ate at a table in the
sunshine. It was an absolutely gorgeous
day and the sunshine was welcomed.
In addition to the education,
networking, good food, and speakers,
we also had a booth of affordable
jewelry that is sold with the funds going
to the TN Division Annual Meeting. You
could find most of the Nashville Chapter
members around that table looking and
buying.
To those of you who do not take
advantage of our TN Division Seminars
and Annual Meeting, I encourage all of
you to try and go the next time one is
held. Not only do you grow
educationally, but you get to meet new
people and network with them about
the challenges and problems we as
administrative professionals face each
day. It is a good feeling to renew
friendships and know you have support
across our great State. A total of five (5)
recertification points were given for the
day and many of you are trying to
recertify and need points. Please take
advantage of the opportunities that
await you, and let both the chapter and
division help you obtain these points
and do your part by attending seminars
and meetings.

Part-Time Work: A
Possible Ticket to a FullTime Position
In today’s still-unstable
employment environment, temporary
work is one bright spot. Many
companies cut staff too deeply during
the downturn and need additional
personnel to meet growing demand. But
they’re not yet ready to recruit for fulltime staff. As a result, these
organizations are turning to temporary
professionals to maintain productivity
and keep initiatives on track as business
conditions — and the ability to hire fulltime workers — slowly improve.
Companies also typically look
to temporary workers first when filling
full-time positions. That’s because
employers are familiar with these
individuals’ capabilities, work ethic and
fit with the team.
Here are some tips for turning a
temporary assignment into a full-time
role:
1.

ask each of you, as members, to

“Filling the
Shopping Cart of Effectiveness:
Knowing What
You Have and
Getting Enough of What you
Need”
Every administrative professional is
very good at many things – that is
part of the job. Yet, no one is
excellent at everything. Knowing
who you are, what you are good at,
what you need to get better at and
how to get there is the key to
professional success. In this
workshop, we will examine several
skills, figure out what you are good
at, what you are not and share ways
to improve where it will have the
most positive impact on you, your
team and your organization.
Join us as we fill the Shopping Cart
of Effectiveness and learn more
about ourselves, our work skills and
how we can become more effective.
This workshop will be highly
interactive with group activities and
lots of discussion.
