Advanced Placement Physics Syllabus Mr. Wichart Physics is considered the basis of all science. Without you realizing it, you are experiencing physics every day. Walking, driving, sitting, talking, all have physics involved. This year we will look at the different aspects of physics that allow us to do the simple tasks, as well as more complex activities. I. Content a. In class, we will be investigating Physics through the New Jersey Center for Teaching and Learning’s PSI program (Progressive Science Initiative). We will be using a combination of power point presentation, interactive questioning, group collaboration, demonstrations and labs to investigate the following topics: i. ii. iii. iv. v. vi. vii. viii. ix. x. xi. xii. xiii. xiv. xv. xvi. xvii. xviii. xix. xx. II. III. Kinematics Dynamics Uniform Circular Motion Universal Gravitation Energy Momentum Electric Force & Field Electric Potential Electric Current & DC Circuits Magnetism Electromagnetic Induction Simple Harmonic Motion Waves Sound Waves Electromagnetic Waves Quantum Physics Nuclear Physics Fluids Geometric Optics Thermodynamics Special Topics (After AP) Materials a. 3-Ring Binder b. Scientific Calculator c. Pen/Pencil Labs a. Weekly labs will be used to reinforce Physics concepts. Some labs will be done prior to covering the concept to introduce the concepts to the class, while other labs will be during or after to reinforce the concept. b. Some labs may require a lab write up. Prior to assigning a formal lab report, information will be given on expectations for the lab report. c. Some labs will have a follow up quiz. These quizzes may or may not be unannounced. So, make sure to be an active participant for your group’s lab. IV. V. VI. VII. VIII. IX. X. Homework a. Getting better at Physics is analogous with getting better at a sport. You need practice! With that in mind, you will often be required to complete practice assignments. The practice assignments will be work that goes along with the units. These practice assignments will be checked for completion and gone over daily. b. Homework assignments will often be extensions to the practice work. These assignments may have more time given to complete before the due date. c. The school’s new Homework policy will be adhered to. If a homework assignment is not turned in, an academic detention will be issued following a call home. Make sure to hand in all Homework assignments in on time to avoid this scenario! Tests a. Tests will be given at the completion of each unit. b. Students will be given the option to retake a test if the grade is not as good as you would have hoped. The best grade will stay in power grade. c. Students wishing to take a retake must make an appointment after school with Mr. Wichart. Projects a. The AP class may conduct a project throughout the course of the year. b. Projects will be assigned approximately a month prior to the due date. Extra Credit a. An AP class should not need extra credit. However, some E.C. opportunities may be given to the class as a whole at Mr. Wichart’s discretion. b. No Extra Credit (expect for Hewitt-Drew-It’s) will be given two weeks prior to the end of the marking period. Grading Test/Projects 50% Labs/Quizzes 30% Homework/Classwork 20% AP Exam a. The AP Physics exam is on Monday, May 12 @ Noon. Remind 101 a. Remind101 is a one-way text messaging and email system. With Remind101, all personal information remains completely confidential. Teachers will never see your phone number, nor will you ever see theirs. Enter this number: (908) 428-4473 Text this message:_________________ Please remember, that I am always here to talk to.
