• The British were Napoleon’s biggest enemy
• To destroy them he began the Continental
Blockade
– Any neutral country or ally of the French empire
were prohibited from trading AT ALL with Britain
– Attempt to economically starve them

• Tsar Alexander I, an ally of Napoleon, refused
to be part of continental blockade anymore
(was hurting Russian economy)
• So Napoleon decides to invade Russia….in
June. With 30 days supply of food.

Moscow, Tsar Alexander I had set all prisoners
free from jails, gave them guns/gun
powder/fireworks, and let them burn Moscow
to the ground

been praying for food/shelter once in Moscow
• There was NOTHING left to the city
• Forced to turn around and march back in
horribly cold temps

island, and return to attempt to regain power

• Napoleon engaged in battle in Belgium to
regain power
• Lost the battle of Waterloo, signified the
official end of Napoleon’s rule

• Exiled again to island of St. Helena (off Africa)
where he died.
• Originally thought to have been poisoned, it is
now known he had stomach cancer

• The Napoleonic Wars created instability of
European monarchs and their colonies.
• The Enlightenment convinced people that
they should rule themselves and because
everybody was fighting Napoleon, they could
not maintain order in their colonies, which
were united by nationalism (common culture,
traditions, heritage, and ethnicity). PRIDE IN
one’s country and the desire to be free.
