FACS 8
Mrs. Elder
The Simle Family and Consumer Science (FACS) program consists of 2 classrooms, one which has five kitchen labs and the
other which has a sewing lab. Simle offers two elective semester: FACS 7 and FACS 8.
Course Description
 FACS 8 focuses on life and workplace readiness skills. FACS takes the basic knowledge and skills learned in math, English
and science and puts them to work so the students can function effectively within the family and a changing, complex society.
 We do many hands on learning activities within class, but we still have written assignments as well. Students will learn about
nutrition, kitchen and food safety, food preparation, clothing construction, money management, social etiquettes and design.
Required Materials & Fees
 The only supplies needed are paper and a writing tool. A folder with some paper in it is preferred over a notebook since it
seems to keep materials better organized. We will only use textbooks in class. However, in case of an absence and make-up
work, a textbook may be checked out.
 There is a $10 fee for this class. This fee will cover a portion of the supplies for the food labs. Students will also need to
purchase a sewing project which will go home with the student when completed. Students will bring home information to
share with parents concerning project choices.
 If there are financial difficulties which make paying these costs difficult, please contact the Mrs. Elder or the Student
Services office at 323-4600.
Classroom Expectations
 Respect yourself, respect others, respect property
 Be on time and come prepared with folder and homework done
 Clean up your work spaces before leaving the classroom
 Obey all school rules
 No electric devices during class time
 No personal grooming in class
 Follow all safety rules and procedures during labs and class activities
Assignments and Homework
 Students will complete a variety of assignments including labs, homework, tests, and projects. Students will usually have
some class time to work on assignments. If it is not completed during class time, it is expected to be turned in first thing the
next class period.
 Students will also have a home experiences where they will need to cook a meal at home for an assignment. Again, if there
are any difficulties with this, be sure to contact the school.
Attendance and Make-Up Work
 If a student misses school, it is their responsibility to get notes and make up any missed assignments in a timely manner.
This can be done by checking with the teacher and getting needed handouts and instructions. Labs will also need to be made
at home to receive lab points. If you know you are going to be absent, make arrangements for the work before you leave.
 Work will need to be current in order to cook in lab.
Grading & Student Evaluation
 Grades are based on a point system. Each assignment will be given specific value. During lab experiences (sewing and
cooking), each lab will be based on participation and work habits.
 Extra credit is available which is cooking at home. There is a form which students need to complete and have the parents
sign before turning in.
 Retakes are available for tests. Once the test has been returned and gone over with students, students have one week to retake
the test. They get the best score of the two.
Extra Help & Assistance

contacted at Simle (323-4600) during my planning time (2:30-3:20pm) or by e-mail at ann_elder@bismarckschools.org.
