Intervention Specialist educational requirements: ECE/IC major requires students to
graduate to pass all Praxis test, pass all gen ed goals and educ 211 with a C or higher.
They also must pass all field experiences which include educ 211, pedagogy, and student
teaching. During their undergraduate studies students must take all education classes, two
math classes, two psychology classes, three science classes one must include a lab, two
language courses, and lastly have at least three electives. A basic job description of an
intervention specialist is to have a Valid Ohio Special Education Teaching
Certificate/License to teach children with disabilities. There are also performance
responsibilities that include, provides an educational program for students as defined in
the students Individualized Education Program (I.E.P.). Works cooperatively with regular
classroom teachers, interpreting the abilities and disabilities of these students, assisting in
classroom intervention strategies, modifying general education curricular as necessary,
and assisting the student with regular class assignments. Communicates regularly with
parents and professional staff regarding the educational, social, and personal needs of
students. Assists the special education student in making a assessment of his/her abilities
and in establishing educational and vocational occupational goals in keeping with these
abilities. Participates as a member of the Student Concerns Team as directed by the
building principal. Develops and implements an Individualized Educational Program of
each child, complimentary to his/her educational strengths and needs as defined through
the multifactor evaluation and I.E.P. process, and Regular Education Curriculum.
Completes necessary reports and record keeping as required by state and local policies
and procedures. Participates in professional growth activities through staff development,
in-service, workshops, and higher education. Other duties as assigned by the
Superintendent or his/her designee. This description above fits my interest to be a
intervention specialist teacher because I have experienced all of this with my little
brother. He is in the sixth grade and has an I.E.P. I have experienced everything that his
IS teachers do to help him succeed in school. Because of this it has made me want to do
the same for other children with special needs or learning disabilities.

Hello Mrs. Fife,
My name is Kayleigh Werling I am a sophomore at Capital University in Columbus Ohio
and I am studying to be an early childhood education teacher and intervention specialist. I
am currently taking the introduction course to education at Capital and one of our first
assignments is to write an email to someone who is currently working in the job that we
would want to pursue. I choose to email you because you have taught my brother Louis
for the past four years at Dover. I have watched behind the scenes what goes on with him
and learned about his I.E.P and what he needs help with and what his strengths and
weaknesses are.
What I do not know is what goes on in your life during a school day? What challenges do
you have with your students? I know this job can be difficult but what are the exciting
parts to your day with a student? How are you able to connect with all these children that
are all so different in learning and their learning disabilities? Would you recommend that
I take graduate classes while teaching or would you say that my undergraduate degree is
enough? If I haven’t asked you to many questions yet I just have one final one for you,
what else do I need to know and learn that I will not learn or be told at college?
I thank you so much for taking the time to read my email and if you have the time to
answer my questions it would really help me throughout my education at college and
after once I get a professional teaching job. Once again I appreciate your time and look
for to hearing back from you in the future.
King Regards,
Kayleigh Werling
