Course Description
This course provides a balance of problem-solving, skill development, and conceptual understanding. Algebraic skill is
developed by writing algebraic expressions, understanding relationships among equations and graphs, and knowing how
and when to use algebraic methods to solve equations and inequalities. These concepts will be studied using technology,
group work, problem solving, collaboration skills, projects, and daily assignments in alignment with the Common Core
and the CPM philosophies of best practice.

Required Materials and Supplies
 3 - ring binder
 Binder dividers (between 3 and 5)
 Filler paper (college ruled)
 Pencils

 Graphing calculator. (TI-83, TI-83 Plus, TI-84, TI-84 Plus Recommended)
Homework
Assignments are checked daily and scored as a 0, 1, or 2 scale. You must complete all problems and show all
work to receive a 2. All assignments must be scored at a 2 in that chapter in order to qualify for a retake
on that assessment. Scores will be entered into Infinite Campus, but not be calculated in their overall grade.
All of the homework problems are the building blocks of the assessments. ). If homework is not complete, a
score of a 0 will be assigned in Infinite Campus.
Assessments
Formal Assessments 80% - These check for mastery of material and include but are not limited to tests, presentations, and
projects. You may retake tests if you complete all of the steps required. (Listed below) Retakes must be done by the
end of the quarter in which the test was taken. Retake scores will completely replace the original assessment score.
Retakes will take a considerable amount of work and it should be noted that doing all the work as it is assigned and
preparing for assessments will be MUCH EASIER than having to retake. Tests will always have problems from previous
chapters. Often, a topic may be introduced in one chapter, but mastery of that topic is not expected until a later chapter. In
that case, the topic will not show up on the test until the later chapter.
Retake Requirements:
 All homework is complete and corrected with all work shown.
 Corrections made on test
 Discuss corrections with teacher
 Any additional practice assigned by teacher is completed
 Completed by given due date.
Informal assessments 20%: These check for mastery of material and include but are not limited to quizzes (which may
be unannounced) and homework problems. These are worth 10% of your grade. These informal assessments will allow
students to show that they have a deep understanding of the material and have retained the material. Informal
assessments may not be retaken.

Absences & Make-Up Work
You will be given the number of days absent to make up any work without being penalized as long as the
absence is excused. Any absence that is unexcused on a quiz/test day will result in an alternative
assessment deemed appropriate by the instructor at a time determined by the instructor.
Academic Dishonesty
Students are expected to conduct themselves in the highest ethical manner in this class. Plagiarism and
cheating will not be tolerated and school policies regarding misconduct will be strictly enforced. Cheating
includes giving or receiving information. Students are expected to show all work. Copying answers off of answer sheets
(online and/or hard copies) or other students’ paper is considered cheating. If students choose to work together, each
student must do their own work on their own sheet of paper and if identical work and answers are shown, it will be
considered cheating. The teacher reserves the right to clear calculator memories before tests and quizzes. Unless
otherwise instructed, the only materials allowed during tests are pencils, erasers, calculators, and formula sheets I
provide. You should have nothing else on your desk or it will be considered cheating.
Extra Help:
Every student will need extra help at some time during this year. The following lists opportunities for students
to receive extra help.

*After school Tuesday, Thursday, Friday (3:00 – 3:30)
*Extended Learning Opportunity Tuesday, Thursday, Friday (2:30-3:00)
*NHS Peer Tutor Program
*The E – book has a section where students can get hints for help on their homework.
*The CPM website, cpm.org, also has a section for Student Support as well as a section for Parent
Support. (Just look in the left hand column).
