an overview, prep time and a decision.

Activities
This occurs at the end of the unit. Before this lesson one should assign
groups, explain the debate and have the students prep their opening
speeches. Students should be able to apply the concepts of
experimental probability, theoretical probability, independent events,
dependent events, binomial probability and expected value to solve
problems.
The committee debate can be completed in one class period with
modifications for time or extended over multiple class periods to focus
on particular aspects.

Committee: Middle School Math Department

The Middle School Math Department wants student representatives to
help them redesign the Pre-Algebra midterms and finals. To do so, they
need to know what probability concept is most important for PreAlgebra students to know and how to apply it in a realistic concept
during assessment.

Make sure each group’s warrants collectively addresses the opening
statement requirements:
o Vocabulary from the unit in each warrant.
o How the topic relates to important concepts from other units.
o An example of a final exam question involving the topic.
To add a written component, this activity could be followed by an Essay PreWriting activity.

Committee Member Guidelines
You are the judge in the round. Specifically, you will decide what bond we would be better off
being made primarily of.
Speakers may only present their arguments or ask questions when you call on them or permit
them to do so.
You are to be an unbiased and non-combative during the “Committee questioning” round.
Instead, you must ask probing and clarifying questions to gather information to help inform your
judging.
You must make sure that each group is allowed to ask at least two questions during the
“Attacking questions from other groups” round. The table below will help you in this task
