(NYSE: IM), the world’s largest technology distributor, today announced the donation of 20 laptops and 20 laptop cases to the students of the Achievement Institute of Scientific Studies (AISS), a Santa Ana, Calif.-based non-profit organization focused around STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers. Ingram Micro donated the 20 laptops to support the studies of AISS student scholars during their senior year of high school and throughout college. The mission of the AISS is to guide academically gifted and economically disadvantaged high school students interested in pursuing a university education in the STEM fields. AISS provides an after-school college readiness program to 20 high school students over a two-year period, which begins with the summer prior to their junior year. AISS collaborates with the principals, counselors, and math and science teachers from six high schools in the Santa Ana Unified School District: Century, Godinez, Santa Ana, Saddleback, Segerstrom and Valley. “Thanks to Ingram Micro, the students of the 2011 AISS class will be able to enter their senior year of high school and college years with new technology equipment they might not have otherwise been able to obtain, said Debbie Wells, executive director of AISS. “Access to this technology will allow the students to further excel at their studies and gain a solid foundation of computer skills and programs that they will need to carry them throughout their school years and beyond. It's so heartening to see a local business like Ingram Micro reach out to the community and make a real difference.” Ingram Micro provided the organization with 20 Lenovo ThinkPad T510 Notebook PCs and 20 V7 Premium laptop cases, totaling more than $25,000. Ria Carlson, senior vice president, strategy and communications at Ingram Micro, presided over the official presentation of laptops to each of the 20 students in the program earlier today. "Supporting our local community is important to Ingram Micro,” said Carlson. “The AISS students are the future leaders of our community and we are thrilled to be able to provide them the latest technology to help them reach their goals.” AISS was founded in 2001 by retired Santa Ana Unified School District educator and administrator, Paul Riordan. The first pilot program consisted of six sophomore girls from Santa Ana High School. These students participated in 120 academic seminar hours in industry workshops involving digital imaging, laser medicine, computer-aided design, optics manufacturing and engineering research. At the completion of the program, the students were accepted into universities such as UC Los Angeles, UC Irvine, Columbia, Chapman and Yale. The program methodology of applying exposure to industry, coupled with financial support and college enrollment guidance has created over 80 program scholars with 100 percent of program participants accepted into the finest colleges and universities in the country.
