What is IB?
The International Baccalaureate (IB) offers high quality programs of international education to a
worldwide community of schools. IB is a 2 year program and it is encouraged that students
receive 2 years of Pre-IB courses before entering the program their junior year.
What is expected of students in the IB Program?
External Exams/ Internal Exams: Externals exams are sent out to be graded by IB teachers
worldwide who volunteer to be evaluators. Internal exams are graded by your instructor.
Paper 1: Reading comprehension= EA

Individual Oral: 10 min based on picture and prompt= IA

1. Course Description
Course Title: Spanish 3-4
Grade Level: 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Spanish 1-2
Course Objective: This course is designed to provide students with the necessary tools to
become proficient in the reading, writing, speaking and auditory areas of basic Spanish. There
will also be a focus on various Latin- American peoples and cultures from around the world. The
goal for this course is to prepare students for success using the target language beyond the
classroom so as to help each student become a lifelong learner of the language. This course will
also help provide students with the necessary tools to succeed in the IB program. It is a strong
belief of our school that the ability to understand and communicate in a second language is vital
to the success of every student in school, college and career.
Course Title: IB Spanish 5-6 Junior Year/ IB Spanish 7-8 Senior Year
Grade Level: 11, 12
Prerequisite: Spanish 1-2, Spanish 3-4
Course Objective: This course is designed to provide students with the necessary tools to
become proficient in the reading, writing, speaking and auditory areas of Spanish. There will
also be a focus on various Latin- American peoples and cultures from around the world. The goal
of this course is to prepare students for success using the target language beyond the classroom
so as to help each student become a lifelong learner of the language. It will also help prepare
students for their final IB diploma/ certificate examinations through the use of rigorous
curriculum and a strong focus on world mindedness. It is a strong belief of our school that the
ability to understand and communicate in a second language is vital to the success of every
student in school, college and career.
2. Materials Required

-Three- ring Interactive Binder: Students will keep all work and hand-outs from this class in
their binder. This can be used as a resource to prepare for examinations.
Spanish 3-4: Students may have a section of their school binder dedicated to this course
Spanish 5-6/7-8: Students must have a binder dedicated to this course
-College ruled paper: Students will use this type of paper for all assignments.
-Student planner: Students will use this to keep track of tutoring, log in homework assignments
as well as other important information.
-Pencils, black ink pens: Students will use these types of writing utensils for all assignments.
-Spanish- English Dictionary (Strongly encouraged, but not required): Students will use this
in class in order to check their work; use of dictionaries will not be allowed during exams.
3. Grading System
Students will be graded using the grading scale provided in the student handbook.

Binder: All classroom/ homework assignments, notes and handouts.
Participation: Each quarter, students will present their completed interactive binder for an
overall grade.
-Binder must have:

Tests: All 9 week assessments.
Quizzes: All 3 week and 6 week assessments.
Projects: All multi-day assignments that may require students to work on their own time outside
of class or in a group.

Students enrolled in Spanish 5-6 and Spanish 7-8 will complete IB Examinations
Assessment and evaluation in both Spanish 3-4 and IB courses will be based on the National
World Languages Standards: Culture, Communication, Comparisons, Communities and
connections as well as IB approved rubrics.
4. Title I Program
Academic tutoring and test preparation is available to all students. Additional support for passing
classes and graduating on time is the intent of these services. Support through Title I funding is
available in the areas of: math, reading and English. If interested, please contact the Assistant
Principal for Instruction, Lwazi Megwa for additional information at (602) 764-9045.
Tutoring:
Students who are in need of extra practice and assistance are encouraged to attend tutoring
sessions. Tutoring is a place to ask for assistance on concepts not understood in class. If a student
wishes to get caught up with missing work, it is the responsibility of the student to check student
view to see what they have missing.
5. Make-up Policy
Missing/ Late Assignments:
If a student is absent or has not completed an item for their interactive binder, it is the
responsibility of the student to get caught up. Students will find an updated table of contents in
the “Table of Contents” folder posted in the classroom and any handouts in the “Handouts”
folder posted in the classroom.
Missing Tests/ Quizzes:
If a student misses a test/quiz, it is the responsibility of the student to schedule a time to take that
test/quiz. No time in class will be provided to make up tests/quizzes.
6. Attendance Policy
“Absent” is defined as nonattendance in an assigned class or activity for more than one-half of
the period. (PUHSD Governing Board Policy J-1561 JHR)
“Tardy” is defined as not being in the assigned class or activity when the tardy bell has finished
ringing. (PUHSD Governing Board Policy J-1561 JHR)
7. Classroom Procedures
Classwork:
-Bellwork are short activities that help students get ready for class. They are completed within
the first ten minutes and remain in student binder until checked for a grade.
-Assignments are activities that give students an opportunity to practice and demonstrate their
target language skills. They are completed every day and remain in student binder until checked
for a grade.
-Wrap-ups are short activities that help students reflect on the day’s learnings. They are
completed the last five minutes of class and remain in student binder until checked for a grade.
-Each classwork assignment will be marked with a checkmark when it is completed at the end of
the hour. If a student needs extra time to finish and does not receive a checkmark, they must
return during tutoring to do so.
-Each 3 week grading period, a minimum of 3 items from the binder will be checked for a grade
and entered in the gradebook. If a student does not have all asked for assignments marked with a
checkmark in advance, they must return during tutoring to do so.
-Cornell notes will be taken each day new material is presented.
Graded Work:
Graded work is always entered into the gradebook and will count toward a student’s final grade
in this class. A checkmark indicates that an assignment has been completed. Graded work only
gets entered into the computer every 3 weeks.
Projects:
Projects will be completed in class but at times may require students to finish their work on their
own time. Projects may also ask students to work in groups.
Quizzes/Tests:
Quizzes/tests will be completed during class. No extra time at lunch or after school will be
provided.
Homework:
Homework will be given after each test/ quiz. When students are finished with a test/quiz, they
are to remain quiet and begin working on their homework.
NO PASS- NO PLAY:
If a student-athlete receives a 59% or below in this class, he/she will be placed on the
ineligibility list. No Exceptions.
Incident Report Log:
Anytime a student breaks a rule in the classroom, the incident will be logged into the incident
report log that will keep record of specific details related to each incident. If the problem
escalates, the student will receive a referral and be sent to the office for student services.
RULES OF THE SPANISH CLASSROOM

Hats are not allowed in class.
No gum, food or drinks allowed (bottled water is ok).
During tests/quizzes, no talking will be allowed.
During announcements, no talking will be allowed.
This class will allow students to speak/ socialize during group work. However speaking/
socializing on topics not relating to the class are not allowed.
My desk area is completely off limits to students.
Students are not allowed to pack up early or wait by the door. When everyone is in their
assigned seats, everyone will be dismissed.

Students are expected to be on time, tardiness is unacceptable and student will receive
START.
Students are to be in their assigned seats and ready to work from bell-bell.
All assignments must be turned in on time in order to receive full credit.
Electronic devices are not allowed in the classroom. This includes but is not limited to
cell phones, music playing devices etc. (If I see it, I will take it and your parent/guardian
will have to pick it up in the security office during regular office hours).
The area around your desk must remain tidy for emergency purposes. Keep all
belongings as close to your desk as possible in order to keep aisles clear.
Do your absolute best to take care of bathroom breaks and water fountain visits during
passing period; I do not allow students to leave class unless it is an emergency.
All classroom provided materials must be returned to their proper place at the end of
every class period.
During emergency situations such as fire drills and lockdowns, students are expected to
stay together and follow all instructions in order to keep everyone safe.
CONSEQUENCES:
If you break a rule…
For the students who do not follow the rules, consequences will be enforced to the maximum
potential according to the Student Handbook and PBIS policies.
REMEMBER:
This is your classroom too. I expect you to be mindful of your surroundings and make sure you
pick up after yourselves. I also welcome your ideas, your suggestions and concerns in regards to
how I as your teacher can make this a safe and productive environment for you to learn. Share
your thoughts; you will see I am understanding and fair.
