AASHTANG AYURVED
 AYURVEDA : It is from India, and is more than 5,000 years old. "Ayur" means life and "Ved" means knowledge. This
holistic science is the knowledge of complete balance of the Body, Mind and spirit, including the emotions and
psychology, on all levels. It includes in its consideration, longevity, rejuvenation and self-realization therapies through
herbs, diet, massage, aromas, mantras.
 According to Ayurvedic tradition health is the balance of five elements air, earth, fire, water and space as such illness is
as excess or deficiency of any particular element or combination of excess elements. Ayurveda treats illness at its source,
rather than at the level of symptoms, and helps an individual to take responsibility for their own health and well-being.
 Āyurvēda is a clinically time tested and comprehensive system of healthcare. A 'Life Science' born of the Vedas and the
precursor to most systems of medicine and surgery in the world. It finds a relevance, in modern healing techniques ,and
has been aggressively researched upon and can contribute significantly to the varied medical and lifestyle needs of
modern day. Latest advancements in modern diagnostic methods can seamlessly be interpreted and integrated into
clinical practice of Ayurveda. Its glorious history spanning few thousand years and scientific temper positions itself as a
link between the ancient, modern and future of health and medicine.
TRIDOSHAS :
 Ayurveda is based on the three doshas . A dosha is an error, a fault in the five elements of the body at the micro-cosmic
level, which is against the macro-cosmic rhythm leading to disharmony, which are invisible forces of nature. They are
manifested in living beings as different characteristics. The three doshas are vata, pitta and kapha. Vata comes from air
and ether; pitta (bile) comes from fire and water, and kapha (phlegm or mucus) from earth and water. These three
doshas do not belong on the physical plane though they help to keep the balance of the body. Balance is attained by the
continuous flow of these three doshas out of the body. They are manifested physically and excreted.
 Excess kapha or phlegm is removed from the body through urine. Sweating helps to remove excess pitta (bile) from the

 system, and excess vata (air) is removed through faces. Continuous and balanced elimination of these three doshas

helps to maintain healthy levels of vata, pitta, and kapha within the body. And imbalance in any one of the three leads
to disease. All three doshas are interrelated and it is important to know that without them, out daily lives would be
difficult.
Ayurveda, the ancient science of India, is gaining popularity in the modern world. People are turning to the eastern
medical systems to find cure for their health problems. Ayurveda has eight branches of treatment called “Ashtanga
Ayurveda”. “Ashtanga” literally means “eight parts or limbs of the body”. They have been developed to treat the
particular needs of the medical world.
Although the system has eight branches of treatment, the basic mode of all these eight disciplines is the same. They are
used in two ways. They are preventive and curative. Ayurveda gives more importance to the preventive aspect of
medicine. It insists more on the positive side of regular practices (Dinacharya) to prevent diseases than treating the
negative side of health, the diseases.
The eight branches of Ayurvedic treatment
The eight branches of Ayurvedic treatment are: 1) Kayachikitsa (Internal medicine), 2) Shalya Tantra (surgery), 3)
Shalakya tantra (treatment of all five senses), 4) Kaumarabhritya (Gynecology and Pediatrics), 5) Agada tantra
(Toxicology), 6) Bhuta Vidya (Psychiatry), 7) Rasayana (Rejuvenation and anti-aging) and 8) Vajikarana (Reproductive
and enhancing strength, vijility and immunity).
Kayachikitsa (Internal medicine)
This first branch of Ayurvedic medicine is the part of general medicines given to treat the total health. The name of this
first branch means treatment of the body. It is the holistic treatment given to the whole person - correcting his lifestyle,
which also includes change in food, dress and place of living.

2) Shalya Tantra (surgery)
Surgical methods of Ayurveda existed long before they were invented in the west. Ancient texts of Ayurveda describe many
details on surgery.
3) Shalakya tantra (treatment of the five senses)
This specific treatment and prevention not only treats the diseases occurring to the eyes but nose, ear, mouth and head.
4) Kaumarabhritya (Gynecology and Pediatrics)
Literally it means nurturing a child from pregnancy to adolescence. The modern branches Obstetrics, Gynecology and
Pediatrics come under this branch.
5) Agada tantra (Toxicology)
This branch deals mainly with toxic conditions and treats poisons and toxins by panchatantra. It is also the science of
treating poisons that occur due to bites and stings and deal with the management of antipoisons.
6) Bhuta Vidya (Psychiatry)
Bhuta means imbalance of five cosmic forces and this part of Ayurveda treats mental conditions that make a person sick.
Sushruta Samhita has prescribed many methods to treat these kinds of problems.
7) Rasayana (Rejuvenation and anti-aging)
Rasayana Tantra deals with methods and treatments that deal with aging. It suggests measures to check aging and to
increase lifespan and brain health.
8) Vajikarana (Reproductive and enhancing strength, vijility and immunity)
This branch deals with improving the strength, vijility and immunity specially after the middle age when there is a natural
decline in reproductivity.

AASHTANG YOGA
The widely practiced Patanjali ashtang Yoga sadhanas are: Yama, Niyama, Āsana,Prānāyāma,
Pratyāhara, Dhārana, Dhyāna, Samādhi etc.
 Yamas are restraints:
It means the restraint of extroverted sensual indulgence which are not conducive for once nature.
 Niyamas are observances:
These are observances which control the internal desires for sensual indulgences by observing certain rules and
regulations daily considered to be pre-requisites for further Yogic practices.
 Āsanas- Physical postures to bring body and mind stability:
Asanas "kuryat-tadasanam-sthairyam", are physical hormonic postures and movements which are capable of bringing
about stability of body and mind and also involve adopting various psycho-physical body patterns, while giving one an
ability to maintain a body position (a stable awareness of one's structural existence) for a considerable length of time.
 Prānāyāma controlling thoughts by controlled breathing exercise:
It consists of developing awareness of one's breathing followed by willful regulation of respiration as the functional or
vital basis of one's existence. It helps in developing awareness of one's mind and helps to establish control over the mind.
In the initial stages, this is done by developing awareness of the "flow of in-breath and out-breath" (svāsa-prasvāsa)
through nostrils, mouth and other body openings, its internal and external pathways and destinations.
8

Later, this phenomenon is modified, through regulated, controlled and monitored inhalation (svāsa) leading to the
awareness of the body space getting filled (puraka), the space(s) remaining in a filled state (kumbhaka) and it getting
emptied (rechaka) during regulated, controlled and monitored exhalation(prasvāsa).
 Pratyāhara:
It indicates dissociation of one's consciousness (withdrawal) from the sense organs which connect with the external
objects.
 Dhārana indicates broad based field of attention (inside the body and mind) which is usually understood as
concentration.
 Dhyāna (meditation):
It is contemplation (focussed attention inside the body and mind) practice of dhyāna, moves one towards selfrealisation and leads one to transcendence, is considered the essence of Yoga Sādhana.
 Samādhi (integration):
It is achieving moksha, i.e. freedom from bondage of birth death cycle and merging or becoming one with Infinity.

MEDITATION
Meditation is a highly specialised spiritual practice. In simple terms it is also said as
“Concentrated concentration”. It requires dedicated effort in understanding and
mastering the preparatory discipline, of Karma, Bhakti and Gyana Yoga and also
initially preparing a healthy body and mind by using the knowledge and practicing the
eight limbs of Ayurved and Yoga .Meditation being the culmination of these practices.
If used properly thus, it leads one to the ultimate state of Self-realisation. However, the
majority abuse this subtle practice and plunge into meditation with unprepared
minds. This harms rather than helps the personality. Thus, one needs to carefully
understand the demanding preparation required for proper use of meditation.
