Resolution The ending of a story where loose ends are tied up. 1st Person Point of View When the story is told by a character within the action (I, me, my). 3rd Person Point of View When the story is told by someone outside the action (he, she). Simile Metaphor A figure of speech in which there is a comparison A figure of speech in which a comparison is made between two unlike objects using the words “like” between two unlike things that actually have or “as.” For example: Life is like a box of chocolates. something in common. For example: Love is a rose. Foreshadowing A device used by an author to suggest that something is going to take place later in the novel. Flashback A scene in literature or film, showing events that occurred at an earlier time. Human vs. Self (Internal Conflict) A conflict in which a character is struggling internally (a struggle within the heart or mind). Human vs. Human A conflict in which a character is struggling against another character. Human vs. Nature A conflict in which a character is struggling against forces of nature. Human vs. Society A conflict in which a character is struggling against society as a whole, not against a specific character. Human vs. Supernatural A conflict in which a character is struggling against Fantasy/Supernatural/Technology such as poltergeists, robots, aliens, divine forces, or supernatural villains. Symbolism The use of an object that represents an idea or an entire set of ideas in a story.
