NORTH REGION ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS
Atherton Elementary School sent 85 students in grades 1
–4 to the Read to Achieve Jam Fest at the Toyota Center on January 25. Sponsored by the Houston Rockets, the event featured games and an awards presentation.
Cook Elementary School
’s community partner, New Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, donated new clothes and bicycles for 50 needy students on January 25. Church members made the donations as a way of encouraging and supporting the students. And on January 28, retired
Houston Ballet prima ballerina Lauren Anderson facilitated a dance workshop for
Cook’s advanced fifth-grade dance students. She discussed with them basic ballet techniques and demonstrated a variety of dance steps.
Crawford Elementary School received a visit from a member of the Organization of Black
Airline Pilots. In addition, an actual airline pilot will come to the campus and discuss careers in aviation during February as a part of HISD’s Black History Month Celebration.
Dogan Elementary School Boy Scouts were at Camp Strake in Conroe, January 29
–31. The trip was funded by Urban Scouting and was free to the students. The camp experience focused on various ways of cooking in the outdoors as well as exploring the wilderness.
Eliot Elementary School
’s fifth-grade class celebrated Career Week on January 28 by exploring the displays and presentations in H
ISD’s “Success Express” bus. The students used interactive computer programs that stressed the importance of staying in school and going to college. The students were also given materials to share with family members. Eliot Elementary also held a Career Day on January 29. Students were encouraged to dress as what they wanted to be when they grew up. Teachers wore their college colors and discussed various career choices. Souvenir pictures of students posing in their career costume were given out to the students to remind them of their dream.
“Stay in School” was the motto reinforced throughout the day.
Nat Q. Henderson Elementary School and Wheatley High School have joined forces to challe nge students to “Take Pride in Their Community and School.” During the month of
February, students will learn first-aid, safety, rescue, and basic life-support skills. They will earn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification and other emergency-response certifications by participating in the Junior Emergency Team program. This event will be held on the
Henderson campus in partnership with the Inner-City Emergency Response Team. Classes will be held Mondays and Wednesdays for high-school students and Tuesdays and Thursdays for elementary-school students.
Houston Gardens Elementary School ’s gifted-and-talented students created a 12- by 30foot three-dimensional mural entitled Body Works depicting the cardiovascular, digestive,

February 5, 2010 skeletal, muscular, and other systems of the human body. A display table with individual
PowerPoint presentations, literature, and models are also exhibited in this monthly project.
Isaacs Elementary School ’s Bumble Bee soccer team won the first of four games against
Dogan Elementary School on January 22. The Isaacs coaches are third-grade bilingual teacher Ricardo Amezola, second-grade bilingual teacher Alvaro Plaza, and first-grade bilingual teacher Ricardo Castro. The Isaacs pep-squad girls coached by Rita Redix were there to cheer the team on to its 3 –0 victory.
Raul C. Martínez Elementary School
has been awarded a one-year School Resource Grant, which provides the school and its families’ unlimited access to an online reading program from
Sylvan Dell Publishing. The program includes 45 eBooks, each with selectable English and
Spanish text and audio. The beautifully illustrated books feature stories about animals and nature and an educational section called “For Creative Minds” that parents can explore with their child. Each online book also includes 30-40 pages of cross-curricular teaching activities and three interactive quizzes, and teachers will have access to resources and curriculum to advance students
’ reading, math, and science skills.
McDade Elementary School hosted “Family Literacy Night” on January 29 for parents and students. The fun-filled evening included a Mad Science Event, the Language of Math, and the
Fundamentals of Reading.
Osborne Elementary School
’s third-, fourth-, and fifth-graders were invited to a Super TAKS
Saturday on January 23. The event featured tutorials,preparation for the TAKS test, and pizza for lunch after school.
Pugh Elementary School has received one-year grant from Sylvan Dell Publishing E-Books.
Students will have access to online learning tools and e-books that support science and technology through reading. The entire online resource is TEKS-aligned and can be used as a home resource by Pugh families. In addition, Pugh Elementary will be partnering with the
Houston Rockets and the City of Houston’s Republic Services to create a recycling program to educate students about the need for and benefits of recycling.

Ross Elementary School ’s third-grade after-school students participated in hands-on science activities at the Kids Day Space Science event held at the University of Houston. They also designed an Astronaut Mission Patch.
Scott Elementary School students and teachers got writing tips from writing guru Erik Cork on
January 29. Fourth-graders and their teachers participated in an energetic rap, rhythm, and rhyme session designed to empower students to systematically organize their thoughts and communicate them effectively on paper. The fast-paced writing workshop has been an annual event at the school since 2007.
Key Middle School ’s Band and Cougarettes took third place in the band and dance competition at the 2010 Martin Luther King Day Parade. Key
’s was the only middle-school band to participate alongside eight high-school bands.
McReynolds Middle School held a CHIP/Medicaid/Lone Star Card enrollment drive on January
29.
McReynolds Middle School partnered with Centro del Corazón and MAXIMUS to provide families with assistance in enrolling for the Children’s Health Insurance Program, Medicaid, and/or the Texas Lone Star Card (food stamps).
Smith Education Center fifth-graders joined Burrus Elementary School fifth-graders on
February 1 for a Joint TAKS Camp. The students will meet every day until TAKS testing is completed.
Jordan High School for Careers inducted 67 of its students into the National Honor Society on
January 29. Houston City Council Member Jarvis Johnson was the guest speaker and urged the students to graduate from high school, earn a college degree, and give back to the Fifth Ward,
Kashmere Gardens, and other neighborhoods in the community. Jordan’s culinary-arts students served refreshments at the reception following the ceremony.
Kashmere High School ’s JROTC and Performance Band performed at the reopening of the
North Region Multi-Purpose Center. The two groups also represented Kashmere in the Martin
Luther King Jr. Day Parade.
