Mother’s Day is THIS Sunday! Wednesday, May 7th: “A” Day Thursday, May 8th: “B” Day Agenda Homework questions/collect Lab write-up: “Titration of an Acid and a Base” Virtual titration Homework: “Titrations Practice” Worksheet Extra Credit Opportunity Lab next time – be sure to dress appropriately.. No flip-flops! Homework Questions Sec. 15.3 review, pg. 556: #1-12 Lab: “Titration of an Acid and a Base” Purpose The purpose of this lab is to determine the normality of an unknown concentration of sodium hydroxide, NaOH. For an acid or a base that dissociates in a 1:1 ratio, the normality is equal to the molarity. NaOH Na+ + OH– HCl + H2O H3O+ + Cl(Both acid and base are 1:1 ratio) Lab: “Titration of an Acid and a Base” After the titration, the normality of the base will be calculated using the following formula: Normality(B) Volume(B) = Normality(A) Volume(A) Rearrange to solve for the normality(B): Normality(B) = Normality(A)Volume(A) Volume(B) Lab: “Titration of an Acid and a Base” Calculation #4: Absolute error: Ea = average Normality(B) – actual value Calculation #5: Relative error: Er = absolute error X 100 % actual value Lab: “Titration of an Acid and a Base” Write-Up 1. Title 2. Purpose 3. Hypothesis: What do you think the concentration of the base is? 4. Materials 5. Procedure 6. Reflection Statement Virtual Titration Before we do our actual acid-base titration next time, I thought it would be a good idea (and fun) to do some virtual titrations for practice. Follow the handout and do HCl and NaOH first. When you’re finished, try other acid-base combinations...
