Steve Skogmo- Class of 1970
Lettered in football, and track. First Team All-NW Running Back 1968 and 1969.Skagit County Champion Pole Vault 1970; Member
of 880 Relay Team that won County, League and District Championship (Setting School and District Records) and placed 5 th in State
in 1968. Member of B-E Track Team in 1968 that won County, NWL, and District Championships. Upon Graduation, ran 3rd fastest
100 yd. Dash time in School History, Tied for School Pole Vault Record and Ran on 4x100 Relay School record Setting Team.
Received Football Scholarship to WWU. Played 3 years as Running Back and Punt Returner. Personal: Worked for Skagit/NW
Distributors in retail sales of beer and wine for 25 years. Currently works for Walton Beverage, pop distributors for Pepsi. Lives in
Burlington. Memories of B-E: Great memories of the best coaches like Glenn Rickert, Jerry Garcea, Bo Campbell and Don Leach.
Also track coaches Ted Whan and Don Erickson. “They brought out the Tiger spirit in all of us.”

Memories of B-E: Vivid memories of beating Ferndale on the road the 2nd game of the season in 1971 as well as the legendary win in
the game with Mt. Vernon. Really enjoyed and appreciated playing for Coach Rickert and the other coaches who gave so much of
their time to make us the players we were.
Dan Berentson- Class of 1972
Lettered in Football,basketball, and track. First Team All-NW Middle Linebacker 1971. Member of 1971 State Champion Football
Team. Skagit County Pole Vault Champion 1972. School Record Holder in PV 12’ 10.5”; 1972. Member of County, League and
District Champion Track Team 1972. Received Football and Track Scholarship to Everett Community College. Skagit Valley
Raiders Semi-Pro Football Team 1974-76. Personal: Graduated from WSU in 1977, BA Communications; Peace Corps Volunteer
in Costa Rica 1978-79; 18 Year Career as newspaper publisher for Skagit Argus (1982-2000). Honored as Lifetime Member of
Washington State Newspaper Publishers Association in 2010. Married to Susan for 34 years. 3 Children , Mike, Jane, and Emily.
All 3 are B-E Tiger Letter Winners. Memories of B-E: Beating Mt. Vernon in the “Big Game” in 1971. Saturday morning track
practices with Coach Ted Whan.
Randy Tastad- Class of 1972
Lettered in Football, Wrestling and Baseball. First Team All-NW Linebacker and starting center Football 1971. Member of 1971
State Champion Football Team. Baseball Captain 1972. First Team All-NW Catcher 1972. Selected for All-NW Feeder Baseball
Game in 1972, catching for future Philadelphia Phillie, Larry Christenson from Marysville HS. Personal: Graduated from WSU with
a BA in Systems Management from the School of Business. Has worked for National Frozen Foods for 35 years in eastern
Washington overseeing 30,000 acres of vegetable production. Lives in East Wenatchee with wife Shari (Entriken) also a ’72 B-E
grad. Two grown children, Tyler and Stephanie , son-in-law James Flowers, grandchildren Addison, and Blade. Memories of B-E:
Being on a football team no one expected to excel, but instead became one of the best ever at B-E. Making friends in high school that
continue to be good friends to both Shari and myself. Having coaches and teachers that were inspirational mentors in high school and
friends today.
Dan Peth- Class of 1972
Lettered in Football and Wrestling. 2 year starter on both offensive and defensive lines 1970and 1971. Outstanding blocker award
1971. First Team All-NW Football offensive guard, 1971. Member of 1971 State Champion Football Team. Played in Regional
Semi-Pro Football League from 1972-1976. Personal: Graduated from WSU in 1976 BA in Agricultural Econ. Director of a
Burlington-based community bank. Owns and manages a farm and cattle ranch in Bow. Married to Rondi in 1979. Two children,
Owen and Rhea, both B-E and WSU graduates. Expecting first grandchild. Memories of B-E: “It was a privilege to be involved in
academics, athletics, and extra-curricular activities under my dedicated teachers and coaches, who always inspired us to reach the best
of our capability. Along with sports, I especially enjoyed being involved in the B-E Band program, which at the time was second to
none. Being able to contribute on a dominating 1971 Tiger football team alongside many talented and driven teammates was a very
special experience, leaving us all with memories we won’t soon forget.”
Jay Overway- Class of 1972
Lettered in both football and track. Quarterback, linebacker, kicker, and punter on 1971 State Champion Football Team. Football
Team Captain 1971. After the 1971 season, held school records for Most Punts in a Season and career. Most Passing yards in a
season and in a game, as well as most yardage passing in a career. 2 Year Letterman in football, WWU. Member of B-E Mile Relay
team that won Skagit County, NWL, and District Championship. Team placed 2 nd in State 1972. Relay Team set Skagit County
record of 3:24.9 that still stands as of 2011. Mile Relay School Record, 3:21.5. Member of B-E Track Team that won County, NWL,
and District Championships. Personal: Married to Nanci and lives in Bayview. 4 Daughters and 8 Grandkids. Worked for
Skagit/Northwest Distributing for 19 years and then owned and operated 3 different convenience stores. Enjoys chasing grandkids to
their various activities.
Steve Mueller- Class of 1972
Lettered in Basketball and Baseball. 2nd Team All-NW basketball and leading scorer, 1972. First Team All-NW pitcher 1971. ERA
of 0.63; pitched 19.3 consecutive innings without allowing a hit. Pitched 4 shutouts and 2 no-hitters. First Team All-NW pitcher
1972. ERA of 0.50. Pitched 6 Shutouts including 1 No-hitter. Had 25 strikeouts in a 12 innning 2 hitter vs. Marysville. Had 11
consecutive strikeouts against Monroe. Elected to State Feeder Game where he had a 10 strikeout shutout. Winning pitcher in the
All-State Game, a 1-0 victory. Pitcher for Washington State University 1973. 1 st Team N. Division All-Star at Skagit Valley College.
1.09 ERA; Pitched 1st No Hitter in SVC History vs. Edmonds, 1974. Personal: Retired in 2005 from Washington State Ferry
System. Two Children, Brad and Brenna. 3 Grandchildren. Lives in Anacortes. Memories of B-E: “I’ll always be thankful for how
readily I was accepted at B-EHS when I transferred from Mt. Vernon halfway through my freshman year. My classmates were very
nice to me! I couldn’t have asked for a better high school experience. I had wonderful teachers and coaches.”
Stanley Rader- Class of 1972
Earned 8 varsity letters in Football, Basketball, and Track. 2 nd Team All-NW Defensive HB , 1970. 2nd Team All-NW FB, 1971. 1st
Team All-NW Def. HB 1971. Member of 1971 State Champion Football Team. Skagit County, NWL, District Champion 120 yd.
High Hurdles 1972 Skagit County, NWL, District Champion 180 yd. Low Hurdles 1972. 7 th State 180 yd. LH. #2 Time in School
History Upon Graduation 120 yd. LH. Member of B-E Mile Relay Team that won Skagit County, NWL, and District Championship,
1972. Team Placed 2nd in State 1972. Member of Skagit County Record Setting Mile Relay and School Record Mile Relay, 3:21.5.
Personal: Distinguished Graduate, United States Air Force Academy, 1976. M.S. Civil Engineering, Purdue University, 1981. Doctor
of Engineering (Structural Engineering), U. of Missouri-Rolla,, 1986. 21 Years as Air Force Civil Engineering officer, Retired as Lt.
Colonel, 1997.
Richard Sakuma- Class of 1973
Lettered in both Football and Track. 1st Team All-NW Offensive Tackle 1971. Member of 1971 State Champion Football Team. 2 nd
Team All-NW Defensive Tackle and 1st Team All-NW Offensive Tackle. Member of ’71 and ’72 teams that combined for 20 straight
wins and scored 686 points to only 51 points scored against. Spokane CC. Skagit Valley Raiders Semi-Pro Football 1974-78. 1975
All-State Team at Offensive Tackle. Personal: Owner of Sakuma Farms. Married to Tami (Mahaffey) for 29 years. 2 children,
Amanda and Rick, both B-E grads. Continues as a community supporter of B-E Football Booster Club. Hosts the Annual
Homecoming Football Bonfire. Memories of B-E: Proud to be a part of the long line of B-E football players that continued the
winning tradition of our school. “We were coached by the best staff ever assembled- Glenn Rickert, Bo Campbell, Don Leach, Jerry
Garcea, and Jack McTaggart.” Enjoyed being part of the ’71 Skagit Super Bowl and beating Mt. Vernon 21-6 in front of a record
crowd. Also to be on the first B-E football teams to finish undefeated 2 years in a row and receiving both home and away jerseys for
the accomplishment. Will also never forget: “ I right, 23 Wham’ 2 back through the 3 hole…”
Buck Gower- Class of 1973
Lettered in Football, Basketball and baseball. Ended Football career ranked in top 3 in career receiving yardage. Member of 1971
State Champion Football Team. 1st Team All-NW Basketball 1973. Team Captain Basketball 1973. School Record for Points in a
Season (468) 1973. Upon Graduation, ranked 4 th All-Time in Points Per Game (18.7) 1973. 1 st Team All-NW Baseball. Team
Captain 1973. Played Basketball at Skagit Valley College.
Bob Bourns- Class of 1973
Lettered in Track and Cross Country.1972 Skagit County Champion 100 and 440. NWL Champion 440; 3 rd in State 440. Ran anchor
leg of Mile Relay that won County, League, District, and placed 2 nd in State 1972. Mile Relay School Record of 3:21.5. Mile Relay
also set Skagit County Meet Record that still stands as of 2011. Member of Track Team that won County, NWL, and District
Championship. 1973 Set State Indoor 440 Record of 52.4. Set Kirkby Field 440 Record of 50.0. Won Skagit County Championship
440 setting record that still stands as of 2011. NWL Champion 440 Meet Record 49.2. District 440 Champion. 2 nd in State 440.
Anchor of Mile Relay team that won Skagit County, and NWL and Dist. Championships and Placed 2nd in State. Earned Track
Scholarship to Spokane CC; U. of Hawaii, and University of Utah. All- Western Athletic Conference at in 1978 indoors for 600yd,
run, U of Utah. Personal: BS Education, Univ. of Utah. Married to wife Victoria for 26 years. Owner of investment properties in
Salt Lake City. Memories of B-E: “Burlington was a wonderful place to grow up and attend high school. The school had an eclectic
mix of teachers, from the incredible Junior English teacher Mr. Williams, to the guru of chemistry, Mr. Macy. Going to school there
was just a great experience. The athletic program was steeped in memories of past greats like Eugene Fitzgerald, and Roland Kirkby,
clear through to the ‘60’s stars like Vic and Gary Randall, Rod Dahl, and Chad Dodd. I also had the privilege of being coached by the
incomparable coach and teacher Ted Whan. He was a very good biology, P.E. teacher and the best quarter mile coach I have ever
seen!”
Dave Komar- Class of 1973
Lettered in Football, Basketball, and Track and Field. First Team All-NW Running Back 1971. Member of 1971 State Champion
Football Team. Skagit County Champion Javelin, 6 th in State Javelin 1971. First Team All-NW RB, First Team All-State RB, High
School All-American RB 1972. Upon Graduation set football records for: Most Carries in Career (493), Most Yards Rushing Career
(2,954), Most Yards in a Game (330), Most Yards Season (1499), Total Yards in a Season (1769), Most Points Season (154), Most
Points Career (360). 1972 and ’73 Skagit County Champion Javelin, 1972 NWL Champion Javelin, 1972 and ‘73 NW Dist.
Champion Javelin. 4th in State Javelin 1973. #2 All-Time Javelin Thrower in School History upon graduation ( 201-3)1973 and ’74
First Team NW Community College RB. 1973 First Team All-American Junior College Grid Wire RB. 1974 Second Team AllAmerican Junior College Grid Wire RB. Personal: Lives in Lake Tapps, WA with wife Tamara Bokker (1974 B-E Grad). Sales,
Marketing and Operations Manager Wholesale Lumber for 29 years. Sons Jay and Max. Jay was a Nationally Ranked Hurdler at Cal
State- Northridge; Max currently plays in the NFL. Memories of B-E: “Winning team and individual awards won’t be forgotten, but
what I remember most was the sense of community. The citizens and businesses of Burlington could not have been more supportive
to events involving the high school. Whether it was a school play, sporting event, fundraiser or passing a school levy the support was
always there. I can’t remember playing in an away sporting event where the BEHS fans didn’t outnumber the home team. I am
grateful to have played for such great coaches and to have played in front of such great fans. I would especially like to thank Glenn
Rickert, Don Leach, Ted Whan and their staffs. I would also like to thank Principal Norris for creating the sense of community and
family at BEHS. Glory and Fame to the Gold and Blue.”
Jack McTaggart- Football, Wrestling Coach 1971-98
Coached and taught at BEHS for 27 years. Assistant football coach 18 years. Assistant wrestling coach 26 years. Head Football
coach 1990-99, Record (52-38). Head Wrestling Coach 1994 Undefeated Dual Season, State Champions. Member of coaching
staffs that won 6 State Championships (Football 1971,’77, ’86 and Wrestling 1982, ’93, ’94). Football Teams won 14 NWL
Championships. Coached 13 Wrestling State Champions and 2 second place finishers. Coached numerous All-Conference and AllState Football Players. Involved in founding of the B-E Weight Room and the Weight Training Program at BEHS. Personal:
Retired and lives in Bow. Daughters Maggie and Molly both multi-sport varsity athletes at BEHS and won volleyball state title in
2011. Three former athletes currently coaching and teaching in B-E School District. Played Football at WSU 1966 and ’67; Taught
and coached at Quincy, WA 1969,’70. Memories of B-E: Feels fortunate to have worked on the greatest staff in B-E Football
History (Glenn Rickert, Don Leach, Jerry Garcea). Also grateful to have worked with so many fine athletes in both wrestling and
football.

Hall Of Fame Criteria
Must have 2/3 favorable vote of the coaching staff and leadership class.
Eligible 5 years after the year of graduation.
* Athletes can be exempt from criteria due to special circumstances as deemed by coaching staff and ASB.
* These are minimal requirements to be considered for Hall of Fame Induction. Athletes who excelled in
multiple sports, and achieved All-League Status Multiple times will receive the highest consideration.
* Meeting the minimal criteria does not automatically guarantee induction into the Hall of Fame.
Individual- Must meet a minimum of 2 of the criteria. Team Sport Athletes only have to meet 1.
