BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Health Science Academy is a personalized small
learning community within Athens Drive High School.
Students complete academy course requirements
and a 135 hour work internships. Academy students
may also participate in required and elective classes
outside of the academy, as well as other activities
such as clubs and sports. Since 1990 The Health
Science Academy has been a part of the Athens High
School curriculum.

meet the needs of students and
the health services community
through collaboration and an
integrated curriculum. In addition
to coursework, students
participate in special
opportunities for work-based
learning, industry connections,
health industry certifications, and
post-secondary educational
opportunities.
ABOUT THE HEALTH SCIENCES…..
Health Team Relations: This course is designed to assist
potential health care workers in their role and
function as health team members. Topics include
terminology, the history of health care, health care
agencies, ethics, legal responsibilities, careers,
holistic health, human needs, change, cultural
awareness, communication, medical math,
leadership, and career decision making.

ABOUT THE HEALTH SCIENCES………
Biomedical Technology: This course focuses on cell
biology and cancer, infectious diseases, pathology,
and biomedical research utilizing curriculum
developed by the North Carolina Association for
Biomedical Research (NCABR) and the National
Institutes of Health (NIH). Students will learn about
careers in biotechnology within the context of the
course content. Projects, teamwork, and
demonstrations serve as instructional strategies that
reinforce the curriculum content.

BIOGEN and The NC State Laboratory
ABOUT THE HEALTH SCIENCES……..
Health Science I Honors: This course focuses on human
anatomy, physiology and human body diseases and
disorders, and biomedical therapies. Students will
learn about health care careers within the context of
human body systems. Projects, teamwork, and
demonstrations serve as instructional strategies that
reinforce the curriculum content. English language
arts and science are reinforced in this course.
Off Site Learning Experiences (OLEs)– Work-based
learning strategies appropriate for this course include
service learning and job shadowing.
ABOUT THE HEALTH SCIENCES……..
Health Science II Honors: This course is designed to
help students expand their understanding of
financing and trends of health care agencies,
fundamentals of wellness, legal and ethical issues,
concepts of teamwork, and effective communication.
Students will learn health care skills, including
current CPR and first aid training.

ABOUT THE HEALTH SCIENCES
Pharmacy Technician Honors: This course has selfpaced, on-line instruction designed to prepare high
school seniors for a pharmacy technician career.
Topics included in this course are federal law,
medication used in major body systems, calculations,
and pharmacy operations. The student will be eligible
to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board
(PTCB) exam upon successful completion of the
course, graduation from high school, and having no
felony record.
Students must have completed HS 1 and HS 2 prior to
enrollment.
ABOUT THE HEALTH SCIENCES…….
Advanced Studies: This culminating course is for juniors
and seniors who have earned two technical credits,
one of which is a completer course, in one Career
Cluster. The Advanced Studies course must augment
the content of the completer course and prepare
students for success in transitioning
to postsecondary education and future careers.
Students work under the guidance of a teacher with
expertise in the content of the completer course in
collaboration with community members, business
representatives, and other school-based personnel.
The four parts of the course include writing a
research paper, producing a product, developing a
portfolio, and delivering a presentation.
