 W.6.2. Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and
information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content.
 W.6.7. Conduct short research projects to answer a question, drawing on several sources and refocusing
the inquiry when appropriate.

Strategy: Research, Create Glog
Objective:
 SWBAT create a Glog in a group of two or three over their assigned mountain, based on the Climbing
Excursion Glog Requirements handout.
Materials:
 Climbing Excursion Glog Requirements handout
 Websites handout
 Computers for students
Accommodations:
 Offer extra guidance to Alec, Lucas, and Trent.
Anticipatory Set:
 Have any of you ever gone hiking or rock climbing? What kind of troubles did you come across?
Procedures:
 Present scenario to class: “You are a mountain climbing team preparing to go on a climbing excursion.
While on your journey, you will be climbing several of the world’s most rugged mountains. In order to
plan for your journey, you will be studying several aspects of a specific mountain range in groups of two
or three. During your research, you will need to assess the terrain of the mountain, possible dangers,





equipment required, and anything else you think will be necessary for a successful climb. Your team is
counting on you, so make sure your information is accurate. Otherwise, it could mean life or death.”
Distribute Climbing Excursion Glog Requirements handout
Explain requirements (Glog and Info)
Review Glog tools
o Wall
o Text
o Pictures
o Links
o Videos
o Graphics
Give students the handout with web addresses on it for them to begin their research
o Tell students it is okay to use Wikipedia and search engines to enrich their research
Students work on projects for duration of period
Closure:
 Say: “You have two more days to research before you set out on your journey. Has anyone found
information they think will be especially important for the team to know?” Take a couple answers.
Evaluation:
 TWC that students have created a Glog in a group of two or three over their assigned mountain, based
on the Climbing Excursion Glog Requirements handout.
