The Task

Your job is to collect data about the moon. Your
crew of astronauts will work as a team to collect
this scientific information. You will need to show
your data sheet to mission control (teacher).
Data collection:
Distance from the earth (How many kilometers?)
Diameter (What is the distance across the moon?)
Surface (What is the surface of the moon like?)
Temperature (What is the temperature on the moon?)
Atmosphere (Does the moon have an atmosphere?)
Appearance (Why does the moon appear to change
its shape?)
Other interesting facts (special features, Does it have

volcanoes, craters, mountains, etc.?) Created by Lu Ann

Communication:
Create a venn diagram comparing and contrasting
the moon to the earth
Use the calendar template to show apparent changes
in the mOOn’S Shape durinG One mOnth.
Design a model of the moon in relation to the earth.
Present your data as a crew to your peers and
mission control.

Sheet 1
Sheet 2
Sheet 3
3.
Decide which data sheet each crew member will be
responsible for completing with information about
the moon.
4.
You are now ready to start collecting data.
5.
To do your research, click on the links at the
bottom of this page, use your science textbook,

7.
When you have finished collecting data, print out the
Venn diagram template and complete with other crew
members.
8.
Print out the calendar template and complete.. Be ready
to explain your drawings
9.
Construct a model of the moon and earth.
10. Finally, your crew will share the information you have
collected with mission control and the class. As a crew,
first practice how you will present your data. Use a clear,
loud voice. Make eye contact with your audience.

Your data sheets, Venn diagram, calendar, model,
and class presentation will be evaluated. There is a
checklist to help you make sure that you have
completed all the necessary steps of the moon walk
web quest. Print out this checklist. Check to
confirm that you have completed all the steps.
Mission control will also evaluate your web quest
using this form. You will complete a self evaluation
form.

Conclusion
Introduction | Task | Process | Evaluation | Conclusion | Standards | Resources | Teacher Notes
During your web quest, you have learned many facts about the moon,
yet there is so much more to learn. The vastness of space has given
us many challenges and questions.
Check out some of the links below to learn more about space. Can you
find other web sites that have interesting information about the
moon?
Find some science fiction books in the media center. Do any of the
books contain factual information? On what scientific facts has
the author chosen to base the story on? Why? Write a response to
a selection in your journal.

collecting specimens for analysis.
3.1.3 Keep and report records of investigations and observations using tools, such as journals, charts, graphs, and
computers.
3.1.4 Discuss the results of investigations and consider the explanations of others.
3.1.5 Demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively while respecting the ideas of others and communicating one’s
own conclusions about findings
3.2.6 Make sketches and write descriptions to aid in explaining procedures or ideas.
3.3.1 Observe and describe the apparent motion of the sun and moon over a time span of o
3.5.1 Select and use appropriate measuring units, such as centimeters (cm) and meters (m), grams (g) and kilograms
(kg), and degrees Celsius (ºC). ne day
3.3.4 Observe and describe that the moon looks a little different every day, but looks the same again about every
four weeks.
3.5.5 Explain that one way to make sense of something is to think of how it relates to something more familiar.
3.6.3 Explain how a model of something is different from the real thing but can be used to learn something about
the real thing.
