If Your Butt Is Numb, So Is Your Brain
Huff & Puff Your Way To Better
Behavior & Academics
Why Are We Here?
How Physical Activity Impact
Learning, Behavior & Academics
• “..exercise and
recreation…are as
necessary as reading; I will
rather say more necessary,
because health is worth
more than learning…If the
body be feeble, the
mind will not be strong.”
Thomas Jefferson
Active, Healthy & Happy Kids Do Better in School
Physical Activity Turns on the Brain
Brain after sitting quietly
Brain after 20 minute walk
“Plasticity in the brain is important for
learning, memory & motor skill coordination”
Research/scan compliments of Dr. Chuck Hillman University of Illinois
The Brain: Where Learning
Happens
2% of body weight
20% of cardiac output
20% of total oxygen consumption
25% of glucose utilization
*The brain stores NO glucose

Does Physical Activity Make A Difference?

Aerobic Activity: Friend of Learning
Immediately Following Aerobic Exercise:
1.
Memory is sharper:
Exercisers learned 20% better
2. Improved on-task behavior during academic instruction
The least on-task students improved the most (20%)
3. Reading Comprehension Improves
Participants scored a full grade level higher
4. Response Time and Accuracy Improves (Think Jeopardy)
Runners were significantly quicker and more accurate
5. Higher Order Thinking is Enhanced (Google Boardroom)
Meetings are on treadmills
6. Self Control Improves
Disciplinary incidents decrease
7. Improves Mood
Exercise has the same effect on the treatment of depression as medication
STRATEGY #6 OF A WORLD-CLASS EDUCATIONAL
SYSTEM:
Use data & research to improve teaching & learning
everyday
We should expand what works and stop doing what doesn’t.
•
The Minnesota’s Promise project began in 2005, when twenty-seven past and present superintendents of schools
came together to share strategies and build relationships across rural, urban, and suburban lines.
• Their Vision: A World-Class Future for Minnesota's Schools
Fitness And Academic Performance
“We now have compelling evidence
that the physical well-being of students
has a direct impact on their ability to
achieve academically. We now have
the proof we’ve been looking for:
students achieve best when
they are physically fit.”
Delaine Eastin Superintendent of Public Instruction at California Department of
Education (CDE)

Higher academic achievement is
associated with higher levels of
fitness in grade 5, 7, 9.
The relationship between academic
achievement and fitness in grade 5,
7, 9 was greater in mathematics
than in reading, particularly at high
fitness levels.

Fit Students Score Higher
“Significant associations were consistently found
between physical fitness &:
Academic Performance
(TAKS) – Higher levels of fitness are associated
with better academic performance.
School Attendance
Higher levels of fitness are associated
with better school attendance.
School Incidents
Higher levels of fitness are associated
with fewer negative school incidents
Daily Physical Education and Physical Activity
Changes Fitness, Academics, and Behavior
Anthony Elementary in Leavenworth, Kansas Edutopia (Dec/Jan 2006)
In 2004 Anthony increased PE and PA from one to five days a week,
revamped their school lunch program, and added vitamins to the daily menu.
Anthony had three remarkable changes in one year:
1. There was a 1300 % increase in those passing the fitness test
2. They went from 10th in Reading and 9th in Math (in a district with
10 elementary schools) to 2nd in Reading and 1st in Math
3. Office referrals for discipline were reduced from 438 to 18
Cardiovascular Fitness Declines during the Years
“Fitness levels declined with each passing grade level, corresponding with decreasing emphasis on
physical education in upper grades.”
Positive correlation between physical activity and 7
categories of cognitive performance – Sibley (2003)
-perceptual skills, IQ, achievement, verbal test scores, math test scores,
developmental level, academic readiness Pediatric Exercise Science
Exercise improves the rate of learning – Cotman
-rate of learning directly correlated to BDNF levels (BDNF produced by
exercise)
Exercise increases executive function –
Exercise creates a better response to errors – Hillman
- “Flanker Test” results show a positive response to errors made
Exercise makes the body more adept in responding
to mental challenges - Dienstbier 1989
Exercise reduces stress – elevates mood
“Exercise is like a little Ritalin and a little Prozac.” Dr. John Ratey Harvard
Medical school
Complex movement increases executive function
Military Preparedness
• The Department of Defense
estimates that as many as 1/3 of
military-age youth are ineligible for
service because of their weight
• $1 billion spent on management of
obesity and overweight in recruits
• In 2007, approximately 15,000
recruits failed physicals because
limits in weight
•Obesity was most common
reason for medical disqualification
THE OBESITY PROBLEM
Become Overweight/Obese Adults:
-27% of overweight 1-5 year olds
-43% of overweight 3-9 year olds,
-86% of overweight 10-13 year olds [American Journal of Public Health].
By age 11 obesity is considered persistent
Wardle
The Problems it Causes for Learners
Attendance
-Overweight MS students had 25% more absences and 39% more days tardy to school relative to
healthy students. Shore, et al.. “Decreased Scholastic Achievement in Overweight Middle School Students.” Obesity. 16 (2008): 1535-1538.
Academic Achievement
-BMI inversely related to academic achievement
-Hillman & Castelli @ University of Illinois (2007) Journal of Sport & Exercise Psychology, 2007, 29, 239-252
Study of 259 3rd & 5th graders found higher BMI associated with lower standardized test scores
Behavior
-BMI inversely related to behavioral incidents
-Overweight kids are three times more likely more likely to have behavior problems (2003) Lumeng et al.
U of Michigan study of 755, 8-11 yr olds as part of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth using the Behavior Index

-Albert Einstein
Get Outside & Enjoy Nature!
• In the last 30 years, kids
walking and biking to
school went from 4015%. Same time period,
childhood obesity
tripled.

Literacy Physical Education
• LitPE is a program designed
to help a specific grade that
is behind, on the state wide
reading assessment.
• Students come to the gym
every day, fifteen minutes
for 12 weeks.
• Our data shows that
students who are in our 12
week class will more than
double their peers and up
to five the national average
on the winter assessment.
Running Club
• Designed to create more physical
activity during recess
• Track mileage with stickers on a
poster
• Aligns to SHAPE Standards
• We discuss goal setting, pacing &
heart rate
• 1 lap = 1 sticker
• 10 stickers = 1 incentive &
crating a healthy lifestyle
JAMmin’ Minute/Go Noodle
• Brain Movers in the classroom
• Movements can be done sitting
or standing in any location
• Develops leadership,
communication & responsibility
skills for 5th grade students
