Scientific Method Quiz Date: Friday, September 25, 2015 Students should be able to use the definitions: Sequencing: Write the steps of the Scientific Method that are mixed up order in the correct order – Use your flashcards with the pictures and the game format Multiple Choice: Identify each step in a ‘real classroom” experiment or choose the correct definition – Use your flashcards with definitions to play the matching game and give an example from everyday life The 9 steps of the Scientific Method: (Definitions on your flash cards that we made in class.) 1. Observation: Scientists look at the world around them and notice problems. They also use their five senses during the experiment to notice the materials and what is happening. 2. Think of a Question: Scientists ask a scientific question about a problem that they notice and base it on background knowledge and the materials they have. 3. Research Topic: Scientists learn all they can about their topic and materials by reading books, using the internet and learning what other scientists did with the same materials or experiment. 4. Make a hypothesis: Scientists write an educated guess or prediction about what they think will happen. 5. Plan the Experiment: Scientist record the steps they will follow in an experiment so that other scientists can repeat the experiment. 6. Conduct the Experiment: Scientists test the hypothesis by following all of the steps in the procedure. They control all of the parts except for one variable that they are studying. 7. Record the data: As scientists perform the experiment, they measure what happened with the materials and show it in notes, pictures, or graphs. 8. Analyze the data: After the experiment is complete, scientists review their data and think about what happened so they can explain it. 9. Conclusion: Scientists write a summary that explains the data and connects back to the hypothesis to answer if it was correct. Want some extra review?
